Excerpt from Ward Gray, and Other Poems The author of these lines does not make any pretentions to literary ability, since his original training and present circumstances give no allow ance to such claims. His only aim being to give, in a few coarse outlines, certain pictures of life, showing that lamentable disposition Which parents frequently exercise toward their children, which so often brings ruin and desolation in the after life of persons, whose youth promised once a happy man or womanhood. If this sketch will have the effect to awaken a better sentiment in this respect. Caus ing parents to prefer Virtue and ability to rank and finance, his feeble efforts will have been attained. Excerpt from A Cottage Gray and Other Poems Life's hurrying stream flowed past, but nevermore Might cross the gloomy threshold Of that door. Within the shelter of a shadowed room, A lonely woman mused of mornings fled. The silence closed around her like a tomb; The house seemed haunted by her quiet tread. SO pale, so wan, so passionless her face, She looked the ghost of that deserted place. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Poems of Sixty-Five Years The Spider, when included by his friend Samuel Gray Ward in Channing's first series of poems varied but little from its first form, though shortened slightly. When, four years later, Emer son's first collection of poems came out, the resem blance in form of Channing's Spider to a favorite metre of Emerson led people to say that Channing had imitated Emerson's Bumblebee, though in fact his poem was written and printed before a line of Emerson's verse had attracted notice. Excerpt from Goldsmith's the Traveller, and the Deserted Village: Gray's Elegy and Other Poems Gray and Goldsmith were contemporaries. Born in the so-called Age of Pope, both lived well on into the period of English letters dominated by Samuel Johnson. The works of both give indications of the dawning romanticism which was to result in the period of Wordsworth and Scott. Both were writers of fluent and admirable prose as well as poets. And there are some personal resemblances. Both found the prescribed work of college, especially mathematics, distasteful, and preferred to read at will; both travelled extensively on the continent; neither married. But the likenesses between the two are few and mainly superficial. In temperament, in experience, in kind and quantity of work, our authors were very different. Gray was a sober, retiring scholar, who lived by choice within college walls near the great libraries, shrinking from notoriety and cherishing a few friends with intellectual sympathies like his own. He was a painstaking student, devoted to knowledge for its own sake, keenly critical, and loth to publish his literary efforts to the world. Goldsmith, on the other hand, was convivial to a degree. He loved the society of his fellows, even the humblest and the rudest, and was warmly loved by them in return. His parents were poor. Excerpt from Gray's English Poems: Original, and Translated From the Norse and Welsh HE editor has arranged, as far as possible, the English Poems of Gray in chronological order and has illustrated them from Gray's correspondence. So much biographical detail will be found in the notes, that the account of the poet's life in the Introduction is necessarily short. If therein one or two circumstances are less briefly treated, this is because they have needed hitherto to be more exactly stated.
