A comprehensive introduction to the burgeoning field of photonics The field of photonics is finding increasing applications across a broad range of industries. While many other books provide an overview of the subject, Fundamentals of Light Sources and Lasers closes a clear gap in the current literature by concentrating on the principles of laser operation as well as providing coverage of important concepts necessary to fully understand the principles involved. The scope of the book includes everything a professional needs to get up to speed in the field, as well as all the material necessary to serve as an excellent introductory laser course for students. Ideal for self-study as well as structured coursework, the book offers thorough coverage of: * The nature of light and atomic emission * Basic quantum mechanics and laser processes * Cavity optics, fast-pulse production, and nonlinear optical phenomena * Laser technology, including visible gas lasers, UV gas lasers, infrared gas lasers, solid-state lasers, semiconductor lasers and tunable dye lasers Extensive real-world case studies are included to help readers appreciate the practical applications of the material covered. *An Instructor's Manual presenting detailed solutions to all the problems in the book is available from the Wiley editorial department.

"Lasers will continue to play an important and sometimes dangerous role on the modern battlefield. At present, there is no adequate comprehensive protection against accidental or intentional exposure to lasers in combat. Thus, it is critical that the field of laser safety research develop preventative protocols and prophylactic technologies to protect the warfighter and to support military operational objectives. This book details the current state-of-the-art in scientific, biomedical, and technical information concerning the effects of military lasers on the human body. An important purpose of this book is to identify current knowledge gaps in the various areas of this interdisciplinary field, and to offer specific recommendations for laser safety research and development into the future"--

Nearly a decade aga a general review article on the evaluation of optical radia tion hazards was published in Applied Optics (Sliney and Freasier, 1973). This arti cle received many favorable comments but also prompted many inquiries regarding specific optical hazard problems. From this it became evident that a monograph rather than a supplemental and expanded article was needed to fill this literature gap relating to laser and optical radiation hazards. The present work is designed to fill that gap, and is structured to permit either classroom or self-study use. Much of the material in this book was developed in eonnection with short courses on laser safety and radiometry in which we have participated, as weIl as from our previous articles. In particular, the sequenee of chapters is based upon the experiences which we have had in lecturing in courses with different schedules. One of the great difficulties in developing a text of this nature is that a broad, multidisciplinary background must be included in order that the reader can comprehend all of the subjeet matter readily. For this reason, the material presented on anatomy and physiology is orien ted toward the engineer or physical scientist, while the review material on basic optical physics is intended more for the physician or life scientist.
