From the same pseudonymous author that brought us Manon la Fouetteuse; or, the Quintessence of Birch Discipline, brings us herein a further collection of flagellatory delights. Returning to but not constrained by boards of Manon, Rebecca Birch recounts the humiliatory punishments applied to those wantonesses and the unflinching desires of those who wield the rod, birch, and whip, upon their pliable and pert posteriors. This gem of Victorian erotica, which includes graphically told revelations through open correspondence and sumptuous prose, brims with a sexual energy displayed by those truly fascinated in the art of disciplining, and will be sure to pique the interest of those a fan of the genre. Swish!

At a time when there were almost no career openings for women a group of intrepid and gifted females scaled the heights of what was literally a man's world - they became bawds. Mother Clap - women bawds were often known as Mother - ran male brothels, or Molly Houses. Elizabeth Holland had an immense moated mansion built on Bankside and for thirty years entertained the aristocracy, including royalty. When troops attempted to stop her trade and eject her from the house, she and her girls drove them off. The Georgian bawd Charlotte Hayes held a 'Cyprian Fete' at which gentlemen 'of the highest breeding' first watched athletic young men copulating with nubile whores and then joined in themselves. Fergus Linnane reveals the other side of London's years of pomp and splendour, painting a vivid picture of the bawds, their girls and their clients. Madams is fresh and original, offering humour, insight and a very candid view of the sexual behaviour of Londoners through the ages.

Clandestine Erotic Fiction in English 1800–1930
Author | : Peter Mendes |
Publisher | : Routledge |
Total Pages | : 548 |
Release | : 2016-12-05 |
Genre | : Literary Criticism |
ISBN | : 1351951076 |
This work offers bibliographical descriptions of all printings of erotic fiction in English issued clandestinely during the period 1800-1930. By 'clandestine' is meant books whose publishers and printers attempt to hide their identities, usually by offering title pages whose misleading places and dates of publication may shock and amuse, but which always aim to mystify. Using internal and external evidence, an attempt is made to establish who were the printers, booksellers and publishers, English and Continental, involved in this trade. The printing families or 'groups' into which a large percentage of the material falls are classified, accompanied by illustrations which identify the main printing characteristics ('house styles') of the groups. Bibliographical descriptions follow a checklist of clandestine catalogues; these provide valuable evidence for dating, pricing and 'sales pitch' and information on items of which no copies can now be traced. The work concludes with a series of appendices which provide significant external evidence, and three indexes: of themes, titles and names. Peter Mendes' original research builds on and significantly extends the essential pioneer work of the Victorian collector and bibliographer H.S. Ashbee ('Pisanus Fraxi').
