In October 2003, NAFEMS began to publish a series of articles in benchmark magazine, aimed at covering a number of basic FEA principals in a readable and useful format. This “knowledge base” series continued to run over the next seven years, based on the principal that it is always useful to reinforce basic concepts and theories, no matter how advanced the user of the technology has become. In that time, topics as diverse as mesh convergence, pressure vessel stresses, and fatigue have been covered by the author, Mark Chillery of Chalice Engineering. The aim has always been to outline the basic theories behind each topic, and give the reader a quick “one-page” refresher on the subject matter, without delving too deeply into the specifics of the area being covered. After around 23 articles spanning many aspects of FEA, it was decided that the series itself had run its course, but that the material produced could provide great value to analysts by being put together in one reference manual, which could be used as a day-to-day guide to the basics of some of the engineering analysts most critical areas of work. And so this ‘compilation’ has now been produced in order to bring these articles together in an accessible and user-friendly format, which we hope will prove invaluable as an initial reference into a multitude of topics. The articles themselves do not claim to be “definitive” guides to each topic, nor are they the only manner in which some of the analysis processes defined can be carried out – rather they are written from the perspective of an experienced analyst, working with the technology day in, day out. This compilation also differs from many NAFEMS publications, in that the articles have not been extensively edited by the NAFEMS technical working groups. Each article itself could be developed into a publication many times the length of the original by going through this process, but the aim of the articles is not to provide an all-encompassing view of the topic being covered, rather, they should be treated as an introduction to the basics, to underpin basic concepts, and inspire further reading. We hope you find the book useful, and that it helps in some way towards reinforcing some technical knowledge that you use in your everyday work. As the byline says - “Don’t Forget the Basics...”

This book provides an in-depth treatment of the study of the stability of engineering structures. Contributions from internationally recognized leaders in the field ensure a wide coverage of engineering disciplines in which structural stability is of importance, in particular the experimental, analytical and numerical modelling of structural stability applied to aeronautical, civil and marine structures. This second volume in buckling and postbuckling structures builds on the first, and reports on the development of fast semi-analytical methods for the rapid characterization of postbuckling structures; optimization approaches for the design of stiffened composite panels, and a discourse on imperfection sensitivity. This book will be a particularly useful reference to professional engineers, graduate students and researchers interested in structural stability.

Knowledge itself is soon obsolete; It is a blunt instrument. Only by understanding can problems be solved and progress achieved. Reliability in performance of electronic equipment, in the face of demands for continuing miniaturisation and the anticipated abolition of lead containing solders, represents a major engineering challenge. The involvement of numerous disciplines; such as electrical, electronic, mechanical, manufacturing, and materials engineering together with physicists and computer specialists, adds to the complexity of the situation. Nevertheless, with electronics being the World's largest industrial sector, the potential rewards to the winners are substantial. This book aims to provide the ingredients for understanding, together with knowledge of reliability in interconnection technology and of the implementation of lead free solders. It is strongly contended that such a combination forms the necessary basis for greater structural integrity and enhanced performance The text is essentially in three parts: The intentions of the Part I component {The Materials Perspective, Chapters 1 6) are to present a snapshot of the current, but rapidly changing, global scene and to establish a firm understanding of the fundamentals surrounding interconnection performance. With potential readers possessing a broad spectrum of knowledge and expertise, this is essential. It could be argued that the reason for the limited progress made in this field to date has been due to the difficulties encountered in communicating effectively across the discipline boundaries.

The energy consumption in the world is directly related to the economical growth. Nuclear energy is an air pollution free technology with the potential to satisfy our demands for many centuries. This book deals with concerns such as the use of nuclear energy for weapons, the risk of accidents with radioactivity release and the waste management.

Optimisation has been used in industrial design for several decades. In particular, structural optimisation has made a major impact. Many of the general optimisation problems addressed in the past have been of a tactical nature rather than strategic. However, in recent years computing power and analysis capabilities have developed to the point where designs can now be assessed more comprehensively than ever before, with optimisation as an integral part of the design cycle. Moreover there is increasing industrial pressure to provide products whose cost, performance, durability and customer appeal have been refined and balanced to maximise market return.

It is well-known that the topic of composite mate- rials affects many engineering fields, such as civil, mechanical, aerospace, automotive and chemical. In the last decades, in fact, a huge number of scientific papers concerning these peculiar constituents has been published. Analogously, the industrial progress has been extremely noticeable. The study of composite materials, in general, is a challenging activity since the advancements both in the academia and in the industry provide continually new sparks to develop innovative ideas and applications. The communication, the sharing and the exchange of views can surely help the works of many researchers. This aspect represents the main purpose of this Conference, which aims to collect high-level contributions on the development and the application of composite materials. The establishment of this 21st edition of International Conference on Composite Structures has appeared appropriate to continue what has been begun during the previous editions. ICCS wants to be an occasion for many researchers from each part of the globe to meet and discuss about the recent advancements regarding the use of composite structures, sandwich panels, nanotechnology, bio-composites, delamination and fracture, experimental methods, manufacturing and other countless topics that have filled many sessions during this conference. As a proof of this event, which has taken place in Bologna (Italy), selected plenary and key-note lectures have been collected in the present book.
