Excerpt from Twenty-Fifth Anniversary, Eleventh of November, Memorial Meeting: Souvenir Edition of the Famous Speeches of Our Martyrs, Delivered in Court When Asked if They Had Anything to Say Why Sentence of Death Should Not Be Passed on Them, October 7, 8, and 9, 1886; November 11, 1887-1912 Within the pages of this book, in other and appropriate places, will be found the words that tell the life stories of these men. These are but the forewords of introduction to the stories of these men, and else where within the pages oi this volume will be found, from many who esteemed them aright, words of deep and loyal appreciation, and words of the victims themselves that will, with the cooling of the years and the abatement of the feelings of fear and resentment of those old passions of a quarter of a century ago, help to a gentler and more considerate judgment than was, seemingly, possible in the blind riot of the passions of the hour. That something having at least the semblance of justice may now be done to these men, who with high and undaunted courage mounted the steps of the scaffold with words of high and beautiful submission to the judgment to which they bowed, I have written these words. The voices of famous and lesser known figures in America's quest to reduce poverty are collected for the first time in this comprehensive historical anthology. The book traces the most important ideas and contributions of citizens, activists, labour leaders, scholars, politicians, and governmental agencies to ensure American citizens the basics of food, housing, employment, education, and health care. The book follows the idea of poverty reduction from Thomas Paine's agrarian justice to Josiah Quincy's proposal for the construction of poorhouses; from the Freedmen's Bureau to Sitting Bull's demand for money and supplies; from Coxey's army of the unemployed to Jane Addams's Hull House; from the Civil Works Administration to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s call for an Economic Bill of Rights; and from William Julius Wilson's universal programme of reform to George W. Bush's armies of compassion.

A "lively, fast-paced history" (Adam Hochschild, bestselling author of American Midnight) of America’s anarchist movement and the government’s tireless efforts to destroy it In the early twentieth century, anarchists like Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman championed a radical vision of a world without states, laws, or private property. Militant and sometimes violent, anarchists were heroes to many working-class immigrants. But to many others, anarchism was a terrifyingly foreign ideology. Determined to crush it, government officials launched a decades-long “war on anarchy,” a brutal program of spying, censorship, and deportation that set the foundations of the modern surveillance state. The lawyers who came to the anarchists’ defense advanced groundbreaking arguments for free speech and due process, inspiring the emergence of the civil liberties movement. American Anarchy tells the gripping tale of the anarchists, their allies, and their enemies, showing how their battles over freedom and power still shape our public life.
