Mean monthly atmospheric models are presented which depict the periodic variations in the vertical distributions of temperature, pressure, and density, surface to 90 km, at the equator and 15 deg N. The models are internally consistent and in agreement with available radiosonde and rocket observations of the thermodynamic properties of the tropical atmosphere. In the tropics the combined amplitudes of the annual and semiannual oscillations of density at altitudes between 25 and 80 km are approximately the same magnitude as the diurnal variations. Observed data show that the phase (time of maximum) of the annual temperature and density oscillations between 25 and 90 km is nearly identical at 8 deg S, 9 deg N, and 17 deg N, indicating that the meteorological equator for thermodynamic properties of the atmosphere is 8 to 10 deg south of the geographical equator. A triaxial piezoelectric accelerometer has been used to measure atmospheric drag acceleration on a falling sphere to determined atmospheric density. The technique allows determination of atmospheric density between 50 and 150 km, with an accuracy better than 5 percent and with an altitude resolution of about 200 m. Comparisons have been made with radar determined drag acceleration measurements, with rocketsonde measurements, and with passive Robin sphere density measurements during the same period. (Author).

A preliminary analysis of the time and space variability of atmospheric density over tropical regions was developed and is presented herein. Emphasis is placed on horizontal distances out to 200 nmi (370 km) and on time periods of from 1 to 12 hr. Estimated rms differences to 200 nmi and the rms variability of density with time are provided for altitudes up to 60 km.
