In recent years the tremendous growth of the service sector—including international trade in services—has outstripped that of manufacturing in many industrialized nations. As the importance of services has grown, economists have begun to focus on policy issues raised by them and have tried to understand what, if any, differences there are between production and delivery of goods and services. This volume is the first book-length attempt to analyze trade in services in the Asia-Pacific region. Contributors provide overviews of basic issues involved in studying the service sector; investigate the impact of increasing trade in services on the economies of Taiwan, Korea, and Hong Kong; present detailed analyses of specific service sectors (telecommunications, financial services, international tourism, and accounting); and extend our understanding of trade in services beyond the usual concept (measured in balance of payment statistics) to include indirect services and services undertaken abroad by subsidiaries and affiliates.

The Asia-Pacific region has emerged as a dominant player in trade and will continue to be an influential component of world trade and economics. This book presents an informative outlook on the various regional and trade agreements (RTAs) and their beneficial effects on bilateral trade. In particular, the authors concentrate on India and China, the two major rising powers, and the impact of exchange of information and sharing of resources between these two countries in wide-ranging areas. It provides an incisive analysis and a roundup of all major RTAs and also presents an overview of all major agreements between the countries involved, which might propel their trade numbers and influence future economic engagements. The book also discusses possible obstacles that are encountered during the implementation of RTAs and circumvention routes that can be taken to ensure the successful execution of the agreements. International trade agreements, such as General Agreements on Trade and Tariffs, which have revolutionized the trade dynamics by opening up new areas of trade and formulating specific guidelines for the member countries to adhere to during trade negotiations, are discussed. The book also provides new insights into some of the issues under negotiation, such as sensitive lists, trade, investment cooperation, and trade in services. The existing economic cooperation arrangements in the region as well as those that are at various stages of study and negotiations, empirical insights and policy suggestions are elucidated in detail.

This book, a compilation of papers presented at a conference at the South African Institute of International Affairs on "The Asia-Pacific and Africa: Realising Economic Potential", highlights the areas of opportunity in South and Southern Africa's commercial relations with countries in the Asia-Pacific region. The economic success of East Asia offers a pragmatic model for development. Africa could emulate this by establishing mutually beneficial partnerships with some of the world's fastest growing economies. Two-way trade between South Africa and countries in the Asia-Pacific region has increased significantly over the past decade, and government and business alike need to formulate strategies in order to expand this further. With long-term forecasts predicting an increasingly important role for the Asia-Pacific, Africa should do more to engage the region politically and economically. A more constructive and concerted interaction with the Asia-Pacific would lead to increased exports and services, attract investment and involve some of the region's wealthiest economies in helping to alleviate poverty in Africa. -- Publisher description
