Success in careers outside the university setting depends on an individual's capacity to master professional skills and respond appropriately to dynamic situations with flexibility, adaptation, and innovative thinking. This book describes a simple, common sense method of how to include professional skills training in any curricula without compromising academic rigor. It relies on introduction of unanticipated yet manageable crises simulating scenarios commonly experienced in the workplace. The method promises to inspire both students and their teachers to conquer new territory outside their comfort zones. Examples include how to respond to a demand for innovation and teamwork, a lay-off, a re-organization, or switching jobs and projects. These situations are bound to occur for most people and in most jobs they often create stress and, perhaps, despair. Preparing and practicing a mindful and healthy response is beneficial, and now this process can be performed in the classroom, while it serves as a platform for character building prior to unexpected real-life events. Key Features: - Description of the importance of, incentives for, and rewards of exiting the comfort zone - Principles for teaching and learning professional skills - Student anecdotes and reflection - Rubric entries and assessment of learning Table of Contents: The Comfort Zone and “Being out of It” / Exiting the Comfort Zone: Reasons and Impact / Getting Educators and Students out of the Comfort Zone / Principles of “Out-of-the-Comfort-Zone” (OOC) Teaching / Anecdotes of OOC Learning / Measuring the Outcome

The Bridge to Your L&D Measurement and Reporting Strategy Building measurement skills is critical for talent development professionals who seek to align their L&D programs to business outcomes for organizational success. Designed to improve your measurement capability and advance the measurement maturity of your organization, the Measurement Demystified Field Guide presents a refresher on the talent development reporting principles framework and measurement strategy. While the Field Guide serves as a standalone volume, it is also a companion to the authors’ first book, Measurement Demystified. In an easy-to-use workbook style, the Field Guide provides nearly 100 skill-building exercises of varying types to help you uncover what measurement work your organization is doing; assess organizational maturity and gaps; understand how to apply specific concepts; and determine what’s right for your organization moving forward. It also offers interview questions to better understand users’ wants and needs; case study exercises to test your knowledge gaps; and reflection questions that focus on your deepening knowledge and skill. You can write your answers in the book or use the resource on ATD’s website. Achieving measurement maturity is a change effort requiring commitment and discipline. Understanding your current capabilities and gaps is an essential first step followed by determining where your organization wants to go in this area. Once both are achieved, you will be able to develop your desired measurement and reporting strategy—the bridge between where you are today and where you aspire to be. The Measurement Demystified Field Guide is that bridge.

For purposes of accreditation, resource sharing, and institutional mission, librarians need to assess the strengths of their collections in particular subject areas. This book describes and illustrates a brief test for determining a library's collection strength. Though such tests are most often employed in academic libraries, the methodology outlined by the author should be useful to all types of libraries in assessing the strength of their holdings. In a time of increasing material and limited resources, libraries need to be particularly judicious in deciding which works to acquire. Oftentimes, a library seeks to develop strong holdings in one or more subject areas. Such an approach is especially useful for libraries that share their resources with other institutions. To plan their acquisitions carefully and to be of greatest use to other consortia members, a library needs to gauge the strength of its holdings accurately. This volume describes and illustrates a relatively brief test to assign libraries a score for existing collection strength in a subject area. Drawing upon expert human judgment and holdings data available from OCLC, the test can assist librarians in setting and verifying collection levels on the RLG or WLN Conspectus scales. Collection strength is often verified in a labor-intensive fashion. The brief test presented by the author is an economical alternative to the more typical labor-intensive approach to collection analysis.
