How is it that the girl with straight As ends up scrubbing floors for minimum wage, living in a room above Vera’s Hairstyling, in a god-forsaken town called Powassan? She didn't marry the wrong guy. She didn't have kids. She wasn't an immigrant, uprooted and transplanted. So what happened? Where are all the straight-A girls from high school? Why, how, have they ‘disappeared’? Marriage and kids is an inadequate answer because married-with-kids straight-A boys (of which, let’s acknowledge, there are fewer) are visible. Everywhere. Even the straight-B boys are out there. So what happens? This is what happens provides several answers as it traces this disappearance with a microscopic examination of one woman’s life. There are three voices juxtaposed throughout the novel: the fresh, impassioned protagonist speaking through her journal entries from the age of fifteen; the sarcastic, now-fifty protagonist commenting about the events of her life, occasionally speaking to her younger self; and the dispassionate narrator. The novel’s audience is primarily women-it will resonate most with older women, but it is younger women who most need to read it. Because this is what happens. "An incisive reflection on how social forces constrain women’s lives." Booklife/Publishers' Weekly "I find the writing style very appealing ... An interesting mix of a memoir and a philosophical work, together with some amazing poetry. ... This is what happens ranks in my top five of books ever read." Mesca Elin, Psychochromatic Redemption "Really enjoyed the novel. I like the use of a journal as the format to tell the story. ... The author gives the reader lots of food for thought. An intense novel." Pam FitzGerald “The self-analysis is astounding.” Claudine Leonhardt “A seriously powerful novel.” C. Osborne “This book is so amazing. I was so enthralled that I just kept reading ....” JB

From CWA Gold Dagger winner Mick Herron comes a shocking, twisted novel of psychological suspense about one woman's attempt to be better than ordinary. Twenty-six-year-old Maggie Barnes is someone you would never look at twice. Living alone in a month-to-month sublet in the huge city of London, with no family but an estranged sister, no partner, and not much in the way of friends, Maggie is just the kind of person who could vanish from the face of the earth without anyone taking notice. Or just the kind of person MI5 needs to infiltrate the establishment and thwart an international plot that puts all of Britain at risk. Now one young woman has the chance to be a hero—if she can think quickly enough to stay alive.

Duet Brinson wrote This Is What Happened to Me to answer people's questions when they see him. People often ask, "What happened to you?" when they see his upper body that is covered in several keloid formations. When Duet explained what happened, he is often met with looks of disbelief and with people thinking he is crazy. Some doctors said that they don't believe what Duet said. But Duet maintains, "It is the truth, so help me God." Duet wants the people of the United States to know what happened to him after completing the superior job of burning missile compartments out of navy submarines at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Duet was the first person to have the experience of completing this job. The job had to be completed within the agreed upon three-month time span. Duet explains how this job has had numerous health-related repercussions not only for him but also for his family.

"A deeply-sensorial reflection on presence, absence, and the act of losing "What Happens is Neither/ the end nor the beginning. /Yet we're wired to look for signs," offers the speaker of Angela Narciso Torres' latest collection, which approaches motherhood, aging, and mourning through a series of careful meditations. In music, mantra, and prayer, Torres explores the spaces in and around grief-in varying proximity to it and from different vantage points. She writes both structurally formal poems that enfold the emotionality of loss and free verse that loosens the latch on memory and lets us into the sensory worlds of the speaker's childhood and present. In poems set in two countries and homes, Torres considers what it means to leave a mark, vanish, and stay in one place. In a profound act of recollection and preservation, Torres shows us how to release part of ourselves but remain whole"--
