The civil rights and black power movements expanded popular awareness of the history and culture of African Americans. But, as Stephen Hall observes, African American authors, intellectuals, ministers, and abolitionists had been writing the history of the black experience since the 1800s. With this book, Hall recaptures and reconstructs a rich but largely overlooked tradition of historical writing by African Americans. Hall charts the origins, meanings, methods, evolution, and maturation of African American historical writing from the period of the Early Republic to the twentieth-century professionalization of the larger field of historical study. He demonstrates how these works borrowed from and engaged with ideological and intellectual constructs from mainstream intellectual movements including the Enlightenment, Romanticism, Realism, and Modernism. Hall also explores the creation of discursive spaces that simultaneously reinforced and offered counter narratives to more mainstream historical discourse. He sheds fresh light on the influence of the African diaspora on the development of historical study. Excerpt from The Annual Catalog, 1913-14: With Announcements for 1914-15 The Museum is indebted to the late Mr. Herbert Brown, for a large and valuable collection of skins of the birds of Arizona; for a collection of ancient aboriginal pottery and other relics; the fossil skull and teeth of an elephant, and other fragmentary remains of ex tinct animals, sent from Yuma. The Museum has been made the custodian of a collection of arms and military relics, chiefly from the Philippine Islands, deposited by Captain Charles C. Smith, of Fort Huachuca, Arizona. Historical records of much value are gradually accumulating as a part of this museum, and an appeal is made to old settlers and others to bear this fact in mind when making disposition of articles bearing even remote relation to the early pioneers and this history. All re cords and data of any nature that can be gleaned are worthy of pre servation, and it is earnestly desired to have them placed at the Uni versity, where they will always be accessible for reference. The history of the peace movement in the United States was one of dramatic change: in the mid-IKWs it consisted of a few provincial societies; by 1912 it had become eminently respectable and listed among its members an impressive number of the nation's leaders; by 1918 it was once again weak and remote from those who formulated national policy. Along with these fluctuations went equally substantial changes of leadership and purpose that, as C. Roland Marchand emphasizes, reflected the motives of the various reform groups that successively joined and dominated the movement.
