Can language hide thoughts? This question is considered by one of Europe's most eminent scholars in his influential essay "Linguistics of Lying," presented here for the first time in English, along with additional essays selected by the author. His survey of the different ways in which language is untrue links linguistic and literary categories in unexpected fashion to anthropology, sociology, ethics, and even good manners.

Curated from the Applause three-volume series, Once More unto the Speech, Dear Friends, edited by Neil Freeman, these monologue from Shakespeare's works are given new life and purpose for today's readers and actors alike. There are twelve titles in this series, which is divided into four categories: monologues for younger men, monologues for older men, monologues for women, and monologues for any gender, the latter being a unique feature since most monologue books are compiled for either men or women. Each book is presented in a smaller format that is more consistent with standard monologue books. Titles in the series: Monologues from Shakespeare's First Folio for Any Gender: The Comedies Monologues from Shakespeare's First Folio for Any Gender: The Histories Monologues from Shakespeare's First Folio for Any Gender: The Tragedies Monologues from Shakespeare's First Folio for Women: The Comedies Monologues from Shakespeare's First Folio for Women: The Histories Monologues from Shakespeare's First Folio for Women: The Tragedies Monologues from Shakespeare's First Folio for Younger Men: The Comedies Monologues from Shakespeare's First Folio for Younger Men: The Histories Monologues from Shakespeare's First Folio for Younger Men: The Tragedies Monologues from Shakespeare's First Folio for Older Men: The Comedies Monologues from Shakespeare's First Folio for Older Men: The Histories Monologues from Shakespeare's First Folio for Older Men: The Tragedies

The book offers an in-depth narratological analysis of the 'Book of Orpheus' (10.1-11.84) of Ovid's Metamorphoses. Starting from fundamental aspects of narrative like time, space, and focalisation, the commentary highlights the polyphony of the various narrative levels. The complex and challenging design results from a constant oscillation between the narrator-persona of Ovid and the programmatic Orpheus-figure which has found a wealth of interpretations. In addition, the study places the 10th book in the overall narrative framework of Ovid's Metamorphoses with its density of intertextuality and metanarrativity.

Trained as a cultural historian, Thomas R. Cole is one of the most influential scholars of his generation, with his work moving beyond and impacting many other fields and disciplines. His work includes The Journey of Life: A Cultural History of Aging in America, which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Cole also published No Color Is My Kind: The Life of Eldrewey Stearns and the Integration of Houston, creating along with the book an accompanying film, The Strange Demise of Jim Crow, which was nominated for a regional Emmy and a National Humanities Medal. Cole created a number of other films as well. In all of his work, there is an emphasis on religion, spirituality, and moral meaning. Cole is also a Jewish spiritual director, and this work has become a major focus for him in retirement. This edited volume engages or responds to Cole’s work, which spans cultural history, oral history, aging studies, film, medical humanities, religious studies, and more. As such, this book is not about Cole per se, but the impact of his ideas and subsequent inspirations.
