Excerpt from Third Annual Report on the Statistics of Railways in the United States to the Interstate Commerce Commission for the Year Ending June 30, 1890 It is not wise to draw conclusions without adequate study, but the thought suggested by the above summary is that uniform rules for the control of railways, should those rules proceed beyond general princi pies of universal application, would be of doubtful utility, and it further suggests the necessity of statistical investigation into the economy of railway management and the conditions of railway competition, more comprehensive and more minute than any that has yet been undertaken. Excerpt from Second Annual Report on the Statistics of Railways in the United States to the Interstate Commerce Commission for the Year Ending June 30, 1890 According to the First Annual Report, the railway mileage on J nne 30, 1888, was 2 miles. The increase shown by the present te port is not wholly due to new mileage constructedduring the year, but is in part accounted for by the addition to the railway list of 117 private roads, whose mileage was excluded from the list for last year's report. The new mileage thus accounted for is miles, leaving as the length of new line brought into Operation during the year end ing J nne 30, 1889. Included in this mileage reported, the number of bridges is found to be of which are constructed of wood, of stone, of iron, and being a combination of Wood and iron. Excerpt from Thirty-Second Annual Report on the Statistics of Railways in the United States: For the Year Ended December 31, 1918 Washington, D. June 10, 1920. To the Interstate Commerce Commission: Herewith is submitted the Thirty-second Annual Report on the Statistics of Railways in the United States for the year ended December 31, 1918. For this year the compilation of the statistics was complicated by the fact that a large propor tion of the roads were operated by the United States Govern ment. From such roads two annual reports were received, one from the Federal auditor with respect to Federal opera tions, and the other from the corporate auditor with respect to corporate transactions. No attempt has been made to give a combined report of the Federal and corporate income ao counts of each road. In the following summaries the plan has generally been fol lowed, where appropriate, of Showing separate totals for (a) corporate reports of roads under Federal operation; (b) reports of Federal operations; and (c) reports of roads not under Fed eral operation. The number of operating roads which, according to the reports on file, were under Federal operation at some time during the calendar year 1918, is shown in the following table. Excerpt from Sixth Annual Report on the Statistics of Railways in the United States, for the Year Ending June 30, 1893 As in previous reports, the above summary presents two sets of totals for 1893, the first pertaining to the mileage upon which complete reports have been made to this office, the other to the actual mileage of the country. Thus the grand total of single track mileage in this summary is the same as that already given in the previous exhibits. The sig nificant figure for this report, however, is not the physical mileage but the mileage covered by reports and made the basis of computation, that is to say, All computations, except those for the General Balance Sheet, are based upon this figure. The total length of track including first, second, third, fourth track, and yard tracks and sidin gs, on June 30, 1893, was 27 miles. This includes miles of second track, being an increase of miles over the previous year, miles of third track, being an increase of miles over the previous year, miles of fourth track, being an increase of miles over the previous year, and miles of yard track and sidings, being an increase of miles over the previous year. The mileage covered by the report for the present year is miles in excess of the mileage upon which the carriers made report the previous year, although the increase in mileage was only miles. This is largely accounted for by the fact that the Central Railroad and Banking Company of Georgia, with miles of operating line, renewed its reporting which was suspended the previous year, and the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway, with miles, filed a report for the first time. The mileage for which complete reports have been rendered to the Commission during the year ending June 30, 1893, is equal to per cent of the total mileage of the country; and when it is observed that there are 74 lines returned as Not in operation, and 99 lines reported as Private roads, many of which are excused from reporting, and that the mileage of these 173 lines is included in the total mileage of the country, it must be recognized that the present report covers practically all the operating railways which render to the public the service of transportation. This report is the most complete report on railway stati stics which has yet been submitted to the Com mission.
