This final report, which covers the period from March 1972 to 30 June 1975, discusses some conditions for the synthesis of aluminum nitride (AIN) single crystals from solution. The solvent systems used are unique and novel. The average sized, water-white, bipyramidal AIN single crystals reproducibly grown from solution only were 1.1 mm long X 0.3 mm wide. The average sized, AIN single crystals grown from a combined solution-vapor reaction technique were 4mm long X 3 mm wide X 2mm thick. The in-house quantitative evaluation of the crystals was restricted to Laue patterns and emission spectrometry only. In Appendices A, B, C, and D, general discussions of solution growth, other AIN growth methods, some properties of AIN, and a very brief discussion of the newly emerging surface acoustic wave (SAW) device technology and why the use of AIN is considered a good electro-acoutic material in SAW devices are presented. This proceedings volume collects review articles that summarize research conducted at the Munich Centre of Advanced Computing (MAC) from 2008 to 2012. The articles address the increasing gap between what should be possible in Computational Science and Engineering due to recent advances in algorithms, hardware, and networks, and what can actually be achieved in practice; they also examine novel computing architectures, where computation itself is a multifaceted process, with hardware awareness or ubiquitous parallelism due to many-core systems being just two of the challenges faced. Topics cover both the methodological aspects of advanced computing (algorithms, parallel computing, data exploration, software engineering) and cutting-edge applications from the fields of chemistry, the geosciences, civil and mechanical engineering, etc., reflecting the highly interdisciplinary nature of the Munich Centre of Advanced Computing.

The ability of thermal energy storage (TES) systems to facilitate energy savings, renewable energy use and reduce environmental impact has led to a recent resurgence in their interest. The second edition of this book offers up-to-date coverage of recent energy efficient and sustainable technological methods and solutions, covering analysis, design and performance improvement as well as life-cycle costing and assessment. As well as having significantly revised the book for use as a graduate text, the authors address real-life technical and operational problems, enabling the reader to gain an understanding of the fundamental principles and practical applications of thermal energy storage technology. Beginning with a general summary of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer, this book goes on to discuss practical applications with chapters that include TES systems, environmental impact, energy savings, energy and exergy analyses, numerical modeling and simulation, case studies and new techniques and performance assessment methods.

Volume 1: Packaging is an authoritative reference source of practical information for the design or process engineer who must make informed day-to-day decisions about the materials and processes of microelectronic packaging. Its 117 articles offer the collective knowledge, wisdom, and judgement of 407 microelectronics packaging experts-authors, co-authors, and reviewers-representing 192 companies, universities, laboratories, and other organizations. This is the inaugural volume of ASMAs all-new ElectronicMaterials Handbook series, designed to be the Metals Handbook of electronics technology. In over 65 years of publishing the Metals Handbook, ASM has developed a unique editorial method of compiling large technical reference books. ASMAs access to leading materials technology experts enables to organize these books on an industry consensus basis. Behind every article. Is an author who is a top expert in its specific subject area. This multi-author approach ensures the best, most timely information throughout. Individually selected panels of 5 and 6 peers review each article for technical accuracy, generic point of view, and completeness.Volumes in the Electronic Materials Handbook series are multidisciplinary, to reflect industry practice applied in integrating multiple technology disciplines necessary to any program in advanced electronics. Volume 1: Packaging focusing on the middle level of the electronics technology size spectrum, offers the greatest practical value to the largest and broadest group of users. Future volumes in the series will address topics on larger (integrated electronic assemblies) and smaller (semiconductor materials and devices) size levels.
