Emily Sarah Holt (1836-1893) was an English novelist. She was born at Stubbylee, Bacup, in Lancashire, 25 April 1836. She was the eldest daughter of John Holt whose wife Judith was the 3rd daughter of James Mason of Greens (who was JP for Lancashire and the West Riding). It is said she was educated at Oxford. Holt had written over fifty books, mainly for children. Most of Holt's work can be classified as historical novels (52 are listed in the BML catalogue). Holt's work has a Protestant religious theme.

"It is so cold, Mother!" The woman addressed languidly roused herself from the half-sheltered nook of the forest in which she and her child had taken refuge. She was leaning with her back supported by a giant oak, and the child was in her arms. The age of the child was about eight. The mother, though still young in years, was old before her time, with hard work and exposure, and it might be also with sorrow. She sat up, and looked wearily over the winter scene before her. There was nothing of the querulous, complaining tone of the little girl's voice in hers; only the dull, sullen apathy of hopeless endurance.

Excerpt from The White Rose I can work, sir, well enough, replied the pupil, when I have an object. An object! Retorted the tutor, lifting his eyebrows in that stage of astonishment which is but one degree removed from disgust; gracious heavens, sir, if your whole success in life, your character, your position, the very bread you eat, is not an object, I should like to know what is! Gerard knew, but he wasn't going to tell Mr. Archer; and I think that in this instance the latter showed less than his usual tact and discrimination in the characters of the young.
