Founded by Abb Paul Couturier in 1937, the Groupe des Dombes is a Protestant-Catholic coalition in French-speaking Europe uniting Reformed, Lutheran, and Catholic scholars in a common spirit of prayer, dialogue, and discernment. Its pioneering work of reconciliation has influenced many other official ecumenical dialogues. This volume presents six statements produced by the Groupe des Dombes from 1971 to 1991, which appear here together in English translation for the first time. These substantial documents express the Groupe s keen insights into the renewal of theology and church life that is necessary for progress toward full ecclesial unity and they invite churches to pursue fruitful dialogue, mutual understanding, harmony, and the hopeful vision of a future in full communion. In the journey of the churches toward the unity for which Christ prayed, no other informal group of scholars has been so influential or long-standing in their service as the French Groupe des Dombes. We can be grateful to have this group of texts drawn together, including one newly translated, which have had such a historic role in developing agreements among the churches. The skillful introduction makes these texts a useful resource for teaching, exploring ecumenical history, and providing resources for church leaders in their response to Christ s prayer that they all may be one. Jeffrey Gros, FSC Memphis Theological Seminary Until now, most of these Groupe des Dombes documents have not been readily accessible to English-language readers. . . . We are very grateful to Catherine E. Clifford for collecting these important documents and for translating the text on the papal ministry. This book will help many people to progress toward the communion of the churches. Joseph Famere Catholic University of Louvain

Classical Trinitarian Theology for Seminary Students is a textbook on patristic Trinitarian doctrines. Part I introduces classical Trinitarian theology with the help of short discussion, definitions, and comparisons. It is designed for incoming seminary students, who have never formally studied theology. Part II is for intermediate students. It comments on three charts, which attempt to depict graphically the patristic search for Christian Trinitarian theology. This section is geared towards seminary students who have already studied for a few years and would like to revisit the classical doctrine of the Trinity at a more advanced level, but who are not really ready for engaging primary texts independently, whether in Greek, Latin, or English. Part III is composed for advanced students who enjoy tackling primary texts. It provides a list of some important Greek or Latin primary texts and the accessible translations in English

Knowledge of the ideas of the theologian Emanuel V. Gerhart is essential for understanding nineteenth-century American theology. Gerhart was one of the first to introduce a complete systematic Christocentric theological system to Americans. His Institutes of the Christian Religion developed the ideas of European theologians and promoted the effort to systematize Mercersburg theology. Gerhart embraced German idealism rather than Scottish philosophy in his scholarship. As a mediating theologian, he attempted to reconcile historical Christianity with modern culture. His lectures, essays, and texts addressed the religious challenges and intellectual issues of his day from a Christocentric perspective. Together they were a major contribution to the Mercersburg Movement in particular and American theology in general from the antebellum period to the progressive era. His publications were devoted to a range of disciplines that included education, philosophy, and theology. This volume portrays Gerhart’s core theological ideas as found in his main texts and offers introductory commentaries and gives the historical background for his intellectual contributions.

The present volume has grown out of a task assigned to me during the meetings of the Archbishops’ Doctrinal Commission in September 1924, to prepare a historical statement on the subject of the Impassibility of God. - From the Preface
