This is an update and expansion upon PMI's popular reference, The Practice Standard for Project Risk Management. Risk Management addresses the fact that certain events or conditions may occur with impacts on project, program, and portfolio objectives. This standard will: identify the core principles for risk management; describe the fundamentals of risk management and the environment within which it is carried out; define the risk management life cycle; and apply risk management principles to the portfolio, program, and project domains within the context of an enterprise risk management approach It is primarily written for portfolio, program, and project managers, but is a useful tool for leaders and business consumers of risk management, and other stakeholders.

Winner of the Project Management Institute’s David I. Cleland Project Management Literature Award 2010 It’s no wonder that project managers spend so much time focusing their attention on risk identification. Important projects tend to be time constrained, pose huge technical challenges, and suffer from a lack of adequate resources. Identifying and Managing Project Risk, now updated and consistent with the very latest Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK)® Guide, takes readers through every phase of a project, showing them how to consider the possible risks involved at every point in the process. Drawing on real-world situations and hundreds of examples, the book outlines proven methods, demonstrating key ideas for project risk planning and showing how to use high-level risk assessment tools. Analyzing aspects such as available resources, project scope, and scheduling, this new edition also explores the growing area of Enterprise Risk Management. Comprehensive and completely up-to-date, this book helps readers determine risk factors thoroughly and decisively...before a project gets derailed.

Project Portfolios in Dynamic Environments: Organizing for Uncertainty is a comprehensive report of research that addresses this important, rising issue. Authors Yvan Petit and Brian Hobbs present the results of their investigation in a report that significantly advances the theory and also offers tips for practice. Currently, those applying project portfolio management tend to focus on the selection, prioritization, and strategic alignment of projects. Little attention is afforded the potential disturbances to project portfolios such as new projects, terminated projects, delayed projects, incorrect planning due to high uncertainty, and changes in the external environment. Yet, these factors can have highly disruptive, even show-stopping influence. This research seeks to answer: How is uncertainty affecting project portfolios managed in dynamic environments?

A review for the book from another world renown author.Rita Mulcahy, PMP, is an author, consultant and member of the Project Management Institute's Risk Management Special Interest Group. Either through frustration at the lack of good, practical risk management reference materials, or because she is bubbling over with ideas on the subject, Rita has written a comprehensive book: "Risk Management - Tricks of the Trade? for Project Managers." The book is structured according to the Institute's view of project risk management and is therefore supportive of the Project Management Professional certification exam. It even has a 50-question Final Exam in the certification examination mode. However, Rita's book is much more than that. It provides a very clear and down-to-earth explanation of what project risk management is all about. I was particularly pleased to see an emphasis on things going right (opportunities enhancement) as well as going wrong (risks). The book is lavishly endowed with bulleted lists of explanation for rapid absorption of content by busy project people. It also has very practical quick-read "Tricks of the Trade" sidebars (e.g. How to interview an expert), check lists, charts, forms and how to use them with worked examples. It is even topped off with quiz games to make it a fun encounter. For University instructors and training workshop leaders there are plenty of "Questions for discussion". In an appendix there is a long list of potential risks, their cause and effect in various industries. No doubt that list has been culled from the brainstorming efforts of many of Rita's workshop attendees over the years. Still, I could not help but empathize with chagrin the construction risk-cause entry "Local politicos, unruly elements, etc." Well said!Armed with this book, there should be no excuse any longer for anyone to declare that they don't know how to apply risk management to their projects, however large or small their projects may be. Nor should there be any question of how to get started or even why they should get started and when. The real benefit of the book is that it demonstrates very clearly that project risk management does not have to be difficult, nor academically challenging. I have always held that project risk management is really very simple. When you are gearing up for your next project, the best advice I can give is "Don't leave home without it!"R. In the ten years since this Gower Handbook was first published, Programme Management has been transformed to become the vehicle of choice for realising the objectives of large scale, complicated, business, government and social investment. The Second Edition of this Gower Handbook is a completely new text; designed as a definitive guide to the current state of Programme Management. To that end the text offers foundation theory and knowledge around key issues such as, managing programme contracts, people and know-how, complexity and uncertainty, benefits and success measures, as well as every stage of the programme life cycle. The main central section of the book provides theory, tools, advice and examples of practical application from an industry context and covers sectors including construction, energy, aerospace and defence, IT, automotive and the public sector. The Handbook also includes a section with chapters on assessing and improving programme competences and developing maturity. Discrete chapters relate programme management to the international baselines and standards. Collectively, the Gower Handbook of Programme Management is most comprehensive guide to the subject that you can buy.
