Africa has a rich diversity of tortoises, terrapins and turtles. This authoritative field guide is richly illustrated with colour photographs that make for easy identification of the 46 African species; it provides accessible, up-to-date information and distribution maps, and examines how these creatures have adapted to their environments. The book offers an overview of their origins, anatomy and biology, their conservation status and the threats to their survival posed by the destruction of their habitats by man.

It’s a black karoo night and a young woman covered in blood is running along a deserted dust track. Siena must reach Seekoegat Primary School, the only safe place she knows, but it’s a long way to run, a three-day ride on a donkey cart. As Siena runs, her story, and the story of her two friends, comes alive. Growing up with her in the margins was Boetie, neglected and wild, and Kriekie, whose mother worked the n1 truck-stops. When they meet again as grownups, the three must relive the devastating events that set them each on a new path.

This collection of folktales from South Africa has been put together the author says, not for scholarship but for a love of the sunny country where he was born. Some stories originate from Dutch sources, and some have several versions. Most are tales told by the bushmen.

Experimenting with the narrative structure by crafting together snapshots, this short story collection touches upon topics as diverse as anorexia, cleaning the oven, the terror of losing a child, exile, infidelity, and desire. Using panache and hypnotic honesty, it traverses the terrain of loss and fear, yet retains elements of quirky humor and sly surprise. Told from the perspectives of a policewoman, an art teacher, an athlete, a bassoonist, a lover, and a mother, these stories are erotic, edgy, and wise.

The underlying theme of this book is that a widespread, taxonomically diverse group of animals, important both from ecological and human resource perspectives, remains poorly understood and in delcine, while receiving scant attention from the ecological and conservation community. This volume proposes a comprehensive overview of the world's river turtles' ecology, conservation, and management. It begins with a categorization of taxa which inhabit flowing water habitats followed by information on their evolutionary and physical diversity and biogeography. Within the framework of ecology, the authors discuss the composition of river turtle communities in different types of lotic habitats and regions, population dynamics, movements, reproductive characteristics and behavior, predators, and feeding relationships. In a conservation and management section, the authors identify and evaluate the nature and intensity of factors which threaten river turtle survival--almost all of which involve direct human exploitation or indirect effects of human induced habitat alteration and degradation. They then list and evaluate the various schemes which have been proposed or employed to halt declines and restore populations, and make recommendations for future management plans for specific species and regions. In closing, they state their viewpoint concerning future research directions and priorities, and an evaluation of future prospects for survival of the world's river turtle species.
