During the past decade a significant international research effort has been directed towards understanding the composition and regulation of the preocular tear film. This effort has been motivated by the recognition that the tear film plays an essential role in maintaining corneal and conjunctival integrity, protecting against microbial challenge and preserving visual acuity. In addition, research has been stimulated by the knowledge that alteration or deficiency of the tear film, which occurs in countless individuals throughout the world, may lead to desiccation of the ocular surface, ulceration and perforation of the cornea, an increased incidence of infectious disease, and potentially, pronounced visual disability and blindness. 7 To promote further progress in this field of vision research, the International Conference on the Lacrimal Gland, Tear Film and Dry Eye Syndromes: Basic Science and Clinical Relevance was held in the Southampton Princess Resort in Bermuda from November 14 to 17, 1992. This meeting was designed to assess critically the current knowledge and 'state of the art' research on the structure and function of lacrimal tissue and tears in both health and disease. The goal of this conference was to provide an international exchange of information that would be of value to basic scientists involved in eye research, to physicians in the ophthalmological community, and to pharmaceutical companies with an interest in the treatment of lacrimal gland, tear film or ocular surface disorders (e. g. Sjogren's syndrome).

The significant progress in the understanding of the pathogenesis and the treatment of Graves’ orbitopathy (GO) has warranted a second edition of this book within three years of the first. Now also fully incorporated is the EUGOGO consensus statement on management of GO, which since has been accepted worldwide as a useful guideline. Furthermore all chapters have been thoroughly updated. Subjects covered include the pathology of GO and the controversial views on its pathogenesis; assessment of changes using reliable measuring techniques; medical management of GO including established and alternative treatment options; technical explanations and illustrations of various surgical procedures and finally, the molecular, immunologic, and clinical aspects of this complex disorder. Two new chapters have been added: one describing the socioeconomic impact of the disease and the other outlining the Amsterdam Declaration on Graves’ Orbitopathy. The successful question-and-answer format facilitates its use as a reference guide for medical practitioners and surgeons working in the fields of ophthalmology, internal medicine, endocrinology, pediatrics, immunology, as well as otorhinolaryngology.

In recent years, close interdisciplinary cooperation of numerous international experts, both clinicians and basic scientists, within the European Group of Graves' orbitopathy (EUGOGO) has yielded much valuable progress and new information, which this publication brings together. Subjects covered include the pathology of Graves' orbitopathy (GO) and the controversial views on its pathogenesis; assessment of changes using reliable measuring techniques; medical management of GO including established and alternative treatment options; technical explanations and illustrations of various surgical procedures and finally, the molecular, immunologic, and clinical aspects of this complex disorder. Stressing the current management of thyroid eye disease, this book offers medical practitioners a thorough overview of associated changes in the eyes of patients with GO. Therefore, this publication is an essential resource for ophthalmologists, internists, endocrinologists, pediatricians, immunologists, specialists in nuclear medicine, neuroradiologists and radiotherapists, specialists in laboratory medicine and pathology, otorhinolaryngologists, orbital and neurosurgeons as well as oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

Traditionally, endocrinology textbooks have been either short notes or multi-author, multi-volume monster, all of which present clinical material last and often only briefly. Endocrinology is different and used real cases to lead readers into the text and then describes the biochemistry, physiology, and anatomy they need to understand the case. The

There is perhaps no area of neuro-ophthalmology that is advancing more rapidly with respect to an understanding of its anatomy and physiology than the ocular motor system. For this reason, it is difficult not only to keep up with the latest information concerning the basic mechanisms involved in the control of eye movements but also to remain up to date regarding the pathophysiology of specific disorders of eye movement. The material in this book is derived from a two-day course on eye movements held in The Netherlands in 1986. The course was designed as an introduction to the normal ocular motor system and to disorders of eye movements and was aimed toward orthoptists, ophthalmolo gists, optometrists, neurologists, and neurosurgeons. The chapters in this book were compiled by a trio of experts in the field of eye movements and contain discussions of anatomy and physiology of the ocular motor system, techniques of examination of patients with diplopia, and pathophysiology of specific disorders of ocular motility. Many of the authors of these chapters are among the most active investigators of eye movements in the world today, and their comments thus reflect the latest information in the field. This text is both basic and com prehensive and thus has something for everyone, from the student just beginning a study of the ocular motor system to the seasoned 'veteran' who wishes to know the latest information regarding central ocular motor control mechanisms. Vitamins in Endocrine Metabolism covers the problems of nutritional diseases in the fields of endocrinology, pathology, enzymology, and vitamin research. This book is divided into 11 chapters that discuss the conditions affecting vitamin requirements. The introductory chapters deal with the intracellular localization, synthesis, molecular structure, and reaction rate of enzymes. The succeeding chapters examine the methods of analysis and mode of action of hormones; pathology of vitamin A deficiency in man and animals; description of vitamin B complex; and diseases of vitamin C deficiency. Other chapters explore the modifying effects of the diet and availability of enzymic activators, as well as the biochemical aspects of isoenzymes, pre-enzymes, coenzymes, and enzyme cofactors. A chapter highlights the characteristics of vitamin, while another chapter is devoted to the chemical structure of vitamin E and the essential fatty acids. The final chapters focus on the exogenous chemical carcinogen. The book can provide useful information to doctors, nutritionists, students, and researchers.
