Excerpt from The Richmond Examiner During the War: Or the Writings of John M. Daniel President Buchanan is the last of the family of Presidents. He was learned in their school, looked and spoke, and endeavored to act and think as they did. The historical character which he desired to leave was one like theirs, and, whatever the failure in essentials, the style and outward mould was that of the Madisons, the Monroes, the Van Burens, Tylers, Polks. We would be uncandid to say that he has filled their measure; for though the retiring President is one of the most distinguished figures of our day; has passed a long life in the most splendid employment; and though he must always be reckoned as one of the most eminent and celebrated statesmen of this country, it is impossible to deny that his administration has been unequal to his fame; that he has left chaos where he found order, ruin where he found prosperity; or that much of this disaster may be fairly charged to his faults of character and policy. Carl R. Osthaus examines the southern contribution to American Press history, from Thomas Ritchie's mastery of sectional politics and the New Orleans Picayune's popular voice and use of local color, to the emergence of progressive New South editors Henry Watterson, Francis Dawson, and Henry Grady, who imitated, as far as possible, the New Journalism of the 1880s. Unlike black and reform editors who spoke for minorities and the poor, the South's mainstream editors of the nineteenth century advanced the interests of the elite and helped create the myth of southern unity. The southern press diverged from national standards in the years of sectionalism, Civil War, and Reconstruction. Addicted to editorial diatribes rather than to news gathering, these southern editors of the middle period were violent, partisan, and vindictive. They exemplified and defended freedom of the press, but the South's press was free only because southern society was closed. This work broadens our understanding of journalism of the South, while making a valuable contribution to southern history.

In this, his first book, originally published in 1971, noted historian Emory M. Thomas offers an astute analysis of Civil War Richmond that remains unchallenged to this day. Blending official documents and city council minutes with personal diaries and newspaper accounts, Thomas vividly recounts the military, political, social, and economic experiences of the Confederate capital, providing a compelling drama of home-front war that, in Richmond's case, rivaled the spectacular events on the battlefield. One of the first studies in southern urban history, The Confederate State of Richmonddeftly demonstrates how Richmond responded to the intense demands of war and became a great capital city.
