Excerpt from Howrah The deep channel alternates from left to right and vice cersa according to the windings of the river, except where deflected by the large tributaries which debouch into it at the southern limit of this district. Proceeding from Howrah Bridge, the deep channel runs on the Calcutta side in the Calcutta Reach past the Fort and Kidderpore to Garden Reach. At Rajganj, Opposite Hangman Point, it crosses over to the Howrah Side, and follows the Sankrail Reach as far as Melancholy (menikhali) Point. It then zigzags from left to right at each bend. A. Barth's The Religions of India is a survey of the popular religions of India. Originally written for inclusion in an encyclopedia, Barth later expanded the work to a standalone text, which is more suitable for a document of such depth. The author begins with an examination of the Vedic religions, commonly thought of as the precursor religions to Hinduism. Barth traces the spread of these religions through time and the evolution of ancient religions into more modern religions, proceeding to explore Brahmanism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Hinduism in great depth, highlighting the history and practices of each. Barth writes in a distinguished, authoritative tone. It is apparent that the origin of this writing was inclusion in an encyclopedia, as the text is heavy with facts and raw information. While there is some degree of exposition and argumentative analysis, the focus here is clearly on presenting the information. The Religions of India would make a great textbook. It is clear, concise, and contains a wealth of information. Amateur historians and readers of religious history will likely find this to be an interesting read, and it makes a valuable addition to the library of anybody interested in India's religions. The Religion of Ancient Egypt is a classic religious studies text by the great pioneering English egyptologist, W. M. Flinders Petrie. Before dealing with the special varieties of the Egyptians' belief in gods, it is best to try to avoid a misunderstanding of their whole conception of the supernatural. The term god has come to tacitly imply to our minds such a highly specialised group of attributes, that we can hardly throw our ideas back into the more remote conceptions to which we also attach the same name.

Returning to 1960s' India after decades beyond its borders, Ved Mehta explores his native country with two sets of eyes: those of the man educated in the West, and those of the child raised under the Raj. Travelling from the Himalayas in the east to Kerala in the west, Ved Mehta's observations and insights into India and some of its most interesting figures - including Indira Gandhi, Jaya Prakash Narayan and Satyajit Ray - create one of the twentieth century's most thought-provoking travel memoirs.

They were delivered in Edinburgh and Glasgow in the months of January and February of this year, but not.
