Excerpt from The Problems of Boyhood: A Course in Ethics for Boys of High-School Age To one who is interested in moral or religious instruction in the Sunday school, the public or private school, the Young Men's Christian Association, the social settlement, or other similar organizations, the boy in his teens presents a peculiarly baffling problem. It has not been difficult to make the work of the Sunday school seem interesting and worth while to both boys and girls up to the age of twelve or fourteen. It has been comparatively easy to hold the girls right on through the period of girlhood up to young womanhood. But with the boy from fourteen years up it is a different case. The physiological changes which take place at this time, of which the sudden rapid physical growth is the most obvious, are accompanied by more profound changes which affect his thought and conduct. The boy who has been docile and gentle suddenly becomes self-assertive and rough, ready to question the authority of teacher or parent. Bob Schultz, a carpenter by trade, has written a timeless book for boys. Wisdom and common sense are gleaned from short chapters covering topics such as authority, inventiveness, and honesty as well as learning to overcome things like fear, laziness, and temptation. Boyhood and Beyond motivates boys to build their lives on a foundation of strong moral principles. Most importantly, these chapters will encourage boys to become the men God wants them to be as they develop a relationship with Him. This is a life book designed to be read and lived out in a boy's life, thus becoming one of his building blocks to godly character and, ultimately, manhood.

What makes a man? This is a question many men in our society today do not feel equipped to answer, because they were never initiated into manhood themselves. They do not know how to pass on authentic manliness to their sons, so boys get stuck in unending adolescence. Everyone suffers from the resulting crisis of male immaturity, and we see its effects everywhere in our society. Leaving Boyhood Behind shows how we can actually do something to address this crisis. Author Jason Craig, cofounder of Fraternus, a Catholic mentoring program for boys, walks through each stage of initiation into manhood, helping readers understand: • What rites of passage are and why they are necessary for men • Christ’s own rites of passage and initiation • What it means for a young man to put away childhood • The importance of belonging vs. isolation in the life of men • The important role both mothers and fathers place in initiation • Discipline and the masculine identity • Living the ultimate rite of passage, and much more “This book is an invaluable resource for all Catholics who care about the intellectual, physical, and spiritual development of the next generation of men.” — Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers, author of Behold the Man: A Catholic Vision of Male Spirituality
