"The Physicians of Myddfai"("Meddygon Myddvai" in Welsh), or "The medical practice of the celebrated Rhiwallon and his sons, of Myddfai, in Carmarthenshire, physicians to Rhys Gryg, lord of Dynevor and Ystrad Towy," was written about the middle of the 13th century. The collection of herbal remedies are associated with Rhiwallon Feddyg (eldest son of the Lady of the Lake), founder of a medical dynasty that lasted over 500 years and comes from the manuscript called the "Red Book of Hergest," a large vellum manuscript written in Welsh shortly after 1382. The manuscript derives its name from the colour of its leather binding and from its association with Hergest Court between the late 15th and early 17th century. The Physicians of Myddfai practised in the village of Myddfai near the market town of Llandovery in Wales, healing subjects with their herb lore and potions as well as their mystical powers and insight into the human condition.

Introduction giving full explanation of the nature of the corpus and the historical context. This will allow readers to understand the nature of the texts, and to make inferences about how the medical texts which follow might have been used. Notes giving sources and analogues for the recipes in other contemporary European languages (Latin, Middle English, Anglo-Norman). These will allow readers to understand the common theories underlying the recipes and to make judgements about the place of this material within the larger European medical tradition of the time. Comprehensive glossaries. These will allow readers to find any recipe based on the ingredients used in it, or the condition treated, allowing them to compare with recipes in other sources themselves, from other time periods, or investigate the corpus of the way different ingredients were used. Comprehensive plant-name glossary giving evidence for the interpretation of the plant names in the corpus from a series of previously unstudied pre-modern plant-name glossaries. This will allow readers to evaluate the evidence for the interpretation of the plant names and hopefully spur on further research on this neglected topic.

About the Book This is the first new and unexpurgated translation of Meddygon Myddfai, The Physicians of Myddfai, for over 150 years. The original mediaeval manuscripts are unique, being written in Middle Welsh, whereas across England and the rest of Europe, Latin was the universal language for documents. Nicholas Culpeper's famous 17th century medical handbooks are at least five hundred years later than the genesis of the works of the Myddfai mediciners. Around 1000 Welsh remedies and suggestions for a healthy life make fascinating reading, with many being useful today. The evocative Legend of the Lady of the Lake (Llyn y Fan Fach) is included. This tale is the starting point for the line of practising Myddfai physicians from being court mediciners to Prince Rhys Gryg (d.1234) until the present day. Not only has the herbal and healing tradition carried on for around 800 years, but the places named in the legend can still be seen, and many of the plant cures have uses in modern medicine. About the Author Terry Breverton has written over forty books, with his main focus being upon Welsh history, heritage and culture. A former businessman, consultant and academic, he has worked all over the world, has given talks about Wales in Boston, Washington, Vancouver and elsewhere, and has appeared in several documentaries. He believes that books, whether in print or electronic form, have to be entertaining and informative, and hopes that this is the case with The Physicians of Myddfai.
