Excerpt from The Patriot, 1921 UN T betsy was a typical old negro mammy, although in her veins ran the blood of three races; the red, the white and the black. Doubtless this racial mixture accounted for her shrewdness and sense of humor, characteristics usually lacking in the dull, stupid negro of pure African descent. She retained, however, and in great abundance, many traits that infallibly appear in the true southern darkey, fore most among which was her love of pomp and show. On this particular morning in June, Aunt Betsy was down at the big house doin' up the clothes. Mrs. Landon, her mistress, (always called Miss Jane by Aunt Betsy) was reading on the front porch. A large black negro seated upon a lean gray horse rode up to the mounting block, dismounted, . Threw the reins over the drooping head of his steed, and made his way to the back door. Very soon after his disappearance around the corner of the house, Mrs. Landon heard Aunt Betsy break off in the middle of the fifth stanza of Old Time Religion and join in conversation with him. He reappeared in a few minutes and mounting his horse, rode away. Mrs. Landon, watching him as he rounded a curve, was startled by Aunt Betsy exclaiming, from the doorway, Law! Miss Jane, honey, don' he look han'some; an' ain't he got on the most elegant clothes? Evidently Aunt Betsy had been impressed by the red flannel shirt and black and white striped trousers of 'her caller.' Excerpt from The Patriot, 1918 Many of our men sat smoking in meditative silence, thinking of the poor fellows lying out there in the field so white and still. They were no longer the enemy, simply the beings of God's creation. Those bodies once moved with the life and vitality He had given them. Mortal hands had destroyed the body, but the soul, impervious to human destruction, took its place in eternity. As they sat there with these thoughts in mind there crept into their consciousness this proposition, Man has destroyed that which God has made, and the deep silence with which it was accepted made one feel he was witnessing an atonement between man and the Almighty. Excerpt from Roosevelt Night: Middlesex Club, Boston, October 27, 1919 The memory of a great man is with us on this day, a soldier, a statesman, a patriot, a President, but above all a great Ameri can, Theodore Roosevelt. He loved his fellow man. He loved his country. He loved justice. Life with him was a practical affair. He had thoughts and theories and principles, but they were important to him only as they gave a rule Of action. With him a duty was something that ought to be done. Theodore Roosevelt was the courage of America to act. His voice is hushed now, his form is still, but his deeds live in an awakened civic conscience that takes on immortality. Others will speak of him and what he did. Let us, like him, consider what we ought to do, and knowing, let us, too, as becomes Americans, act.
