Excerpt from Ole Miss. 1915-1916, Vol. 20: The Yearbook of the University of Mississippi After three years of faithful study, Dr. Leavell graduated with hon ors, and entered upon the profession of teaching. It was not long, however, until his country called him, and in the month of April, 1861, with the rank of Lieutenant, he entered the Second Mississippi Infantry. After a year's service in the army of Northern Vir ginia, he was elected Captain of his company, and held this command until the battle of Gettysburg, when he was made prisoner and carried to Fort Delaware, thence to Johnson's Island, Ohio. During his imprison ment here, Dr. Leavell was a member of a class of students of Law, taught by General J. Z. George. Through the instrumentality of Dr. Barnard, his former college President, who, though a Northern man, was Dr. Leavell's staunch friend, he was liberated.
