Using Coverdale's translation of the Psalms from the Book of Common Prayer, the very best of Anglican chant is married to texts that have been used to sing the transcendent glory of God for three thousand years. The Psalms are ruthlessly honest in their portrayal of conflicting human emotions, and many psalters have excised the verses that speak of vengeance, hatred and anger. Acknowledging that these emotions are also part of human experience, the Anglican Psalter retains this material, to be included or omitted as local preference or the occasion dictates. Includes work by renowned composers past and present including Elgar, Parry, Stanford, Stainer, Wesley, Malcolm Archer, David Willcocks, John Barnard, and many more.

Tunes in this Psalter were collected by Dr. George Guest during his 40 year tenure as Organist and Choirmaster of St. John's College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, England. They are arranged according to the 1928 Book of Common Prayer of the Protestant Episcopal Church in America, and are pointed for chanting. "Informed by a quiet but profound spirituality, Dr. Guest directed the music at St. John's College, Cambridge University for 40 years until his retirement in 1991, where he was university organist (1974-91) and lecturer (1956-82). Guest often remarked that you can only reach a man's head through his heart. It is not therefore surprising that, as the years went on, the chanting of the psalms became an ever more considered and thoughtful meditation. He realized that the Anglican Evensong was the Church of England's greatest gift to the Christian world. It was his genius to give a unique and abiding expression to that liturgy that will live for generations to come." John Gummer, The Guardian

The present St Paul's Cathedral, Christopher Wren's masterpiece, is the fourth religious building to occupy the site. Its location in the heart of the capital reflects its importance in the English church while the photographs of it burning during the Blitz forms one of the most powerful and familiar images of London during recent times. This substantial and richly illustrated study, published to mark the 1,400th anniversary of St Paul's, presents 42 scholarly contributions which approach the cathedral from a range of perspectives. All are supported by photographs, illustrations and plans of the exterior and interior of St Paul's, both past and present. Eight essays discuss the history of St Paul's, demonstrating the role of the cathedral in the formation of England's church and state from the 7th century onwards; nine essays examine the organisation and function of the cathedral during the Middle Ages, looking at, for example, the arrangement of the precinct, the tombs, the Dean's household during the 15th century, the liturgy and the archaeology. The remaining papers examine many aspects of Wren's cathedral, including its construction, fittings and embellishments, its estates and income, music and rituals, its place in London, its library, its role in the book trade and its reputation.
