The fields of hydrodesulfurization (HDS) and hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) continue to attract the attention of researchers in the various disciplines connected to these fascinating problems that represent two of the key outstanding chemical challenges for the petroleum refining industry in view of their very strong environmental and commercial implications. One area that has flourished impressively over the last 15 years is the organometallic chemistry of thiophenes and other related sulfur-containing molecules. This has become a powerful method for modeling numerous surface species and reactions implicated in HDS schemes, and nowadays it represents an attractive complement to the standard procedures of surface chemistry and heterogeneous catalysis, for understanding the complex reaction mechanisms involved in this process. Similar developments have begun to appear in connection with HDN mechanisms, although in a much more modest scale and depth. Some years ago when, encouraged by Prof. B. R. James, this book was planned, several excellent reviews and monographs treating different aspects of HDS were already available including some on the subject of organometallic models. However, it seemed appropriate to try to summarize the most striking features of this chemistry in an updated and systematic way, and inasmuch as possible in connection with the common knowledge and beliefs of the mechanisms of heterogeneous HDS catalysis. Hopefully, this attempt to build some conceptual bridges between these two traditionally separated areas of chemistry has met with some success.

The 2014 International Conference on Energy and Power Engineering (EPE2014), will be held on April 26–27, 2014, in Hong Kong, China. The aim of this international convention is to bring together experts and scholars from around the world and offer them a chance to share the latest research results in the field of Energy and Power Engineering. We all know that over the past few decades, a great change has happened in the field of the environment technology, and the science technology is growing faster and faster. In order to keep up with the daily changing situation, we have sent invitations to experts, scholars and other people who have devoted himself in related fields, and it is a great honor to us that most of them have accepted our invitation and supported the EPE2014 with their latest studies. Up till now, we have received over three hundred papers from various countries; this shows that there has been a growing interest in the field of energy and power engineering. Among those papers received, we have eventually chosen about a hundred to be presented and included in this proceeding. These papers generally represented the current research status in this field and the future trend. We sincerely believe that these papers could be valuable to the future work of yours. Finally, on behalf of the committee, I would like to deeply express our gratitude to those who have supported the EPE2014, especially the international experts who helped reviewing papers, the DEStech Publications help publish the conference proceedings, and last but not least, the authors of these inspiring papers. Without the help from these people, EPE2014 would not be as half successful as it is now. Here, welcome to EPE2014 and let’s hope that it will be a great success. Tim Chou

The importance of biofuels in greening the transport sector in the future is unquestionable, given the limited available fossil energy resources, the environmental issues associated to the utilization of fossil fuels, and the increasing attention to security of supply. This comprehensive reference presents the latest technology in all aspects of biofuels production, processing, properties, raw materials, and related economic and environmental aspects. Presenting the application of methods and technology with minimum math and theory, it compiles a wide range of topics not usually covered in one single book. It discusses development of new catalysts, reactors, controllers, simulators, online analyzers, and waste minimization as well as design and operational aspects of processing units and financial and economic aspects. The book rounds out by describing properties, specifications, and quality of various biofuel products and new advances and trends towards future technology.

Since 1948, this series has filled the gap between the papers that report on and the textbooks that teach in the diverse areas of catalysis research. The editors of and contributors to Advances in Catalysis are dedicated to recording progress in this area. Each volume of Advances in Catalysis contains articles covering a subject of broad interest.Advances in Catalysis 44 reflects the expanding impact of experimental surface characterization on the understanding of catalysis. The catalysts emphasized here are representative of the complexity of today's technology; examples include catalysts for hydrocarbon re-forming, automobile exhaust conversion, and hydroprocessing to make clean-burning fossil fuels. This volume contains three obituaries recognizing the major contributions of Dr. Werner O. Hagg, Dr. Charles Kemball, and Dr. John Turkevich.
