Since his time, the problem has been rigorously solved; first by d'alembcrt, to whom the theory of gravrtation is indebted, for one of its strongest confirmations. That great mathematician determined analytically the motions of the earth's axis, on the hypothesis that the strata of the terrestrial spheroid had any form and.
