Yogi is a West Highland white terrier, a Westie, that I gave to my wife as a puppy at a difficult time in our marriage. In the three years since, Yogi has been both a positive and a negative in our lives. He is an important part of our relationship as a shared interest and as an icebreaker when we have arguments. Yogi has also caused friction between us, for example with my wife blaming me for his destructive puppy habits such as chewing the furniture. He has been so difficult at times that sending him back to the breeder was a constant possibility. Yogi, however, has taught me so much. For example, walking the streets and parks with him has made me realise the importance of being open to the people I meet, the benefits of being a good listener (talking to a dog is great therapy and a wonderful way to work though problems because dogs do not talk back), the importance of habits and routines (how winning the first hour of the day can make the rest of the day better), of being mindful of ourselves and our surroundings, of living in the moment and being grateful for what we have, and much more.I hope this work will appeal to readers who want to reflect on life and meaning, as well as those who like dogs and the benefits of simply walking around and really looking at our surroundings and the sky. And there is a happy conclusion, in that my wife and I remain married and Yogi has become a permanent part of the family.

The editor-in-chief of Guideposts magazine shares the “heartfelt, honest, lovely” (New York Times bestselling author Dean Koontz) story of Millie, his beloved golden retriever, and how she taught him to be a more compassionate person, deepened his faith, and inspired him on his long-term path of recovery from addiction—with a foreword by Debbie Macomber. From the moment his new golden retriever puppy jumped into his arms, Edward Grinnan and his wife, Julee, were in love with her. Edward didn’t know it yet, but Millie would change his life. In this moving memoir, Edward Grinnan writes about his life with Millie—from their first joyous meeting, through her struggle with cancer, and eventual heartbreaking death. Edward shares how her sensitivity, unconditional love, and innate goodness helped him discover those qualities in himself and put his complicated past in perspective. Edward also shares the lessons he has learned from other dogs he’s loved—like Pete, a poodle his father bought him in the wake of his brother’s death; Rudy, who introduced him to his wife; Sally Browne, a mischievous cocker spaniel who befriended the homeless in his neighborhood; and Marty, a hundred-pound Labrador whose behavioral issues challenged his and Julee’s marriage—as well as lessons he’s learned from the celebrated dog stories in Guideposts magazine. Poignant and insightful, Always By My Side is an inspiring book that explores the unbreakable bond between man and dog, revealing how faith shapes our love for our dogs, and how our dogs shape our faith.

Tasse, a small Shih Tzu with a BIG attitude, has gotten herself into many troublesome situations. Much like a young child, she sometimes does not know how to solve these problems. She shares what she learned from her problems In The Monster Dog - Life's Lessons Learned. Tasse learns a really hard lesson when she sneaks out of her yard, gets lost, and meets Sport. She wants to go home, but he says, "Come with me, and let me show you some real fun." She confesses she really didn't want to, but "I wanted him to like me and I wanted him to be my friend." So, they went on down the street together. "Watch this!" he says as he knocks over a garbage can. A lady comes rushing out and Sport runs away leaving Tasse lost and scared and all alone. She determines that "from now on I will listen to my conscience and be more careful who I choose to be my friend."The thirteen stories in the book will delight children. They will help parents and teachers guide children in being welcoming, the consequences of being sneaky, gaining attention the right way, and learning about forgiveness. Beautifully illustrated, artist Katie Hunderosse, has created special pictures that enhance each story. Tasse freely admits that sometimes she just didn't know what to do. Children, parents, and teachers will enjoy what The Monster Dog learned about life's lessons.
