Excerpt from Hints on Painting Structural Steel and Notes on Prominent Paint Materials: A Handbook for Paint-Users Bout thirty years ago practice in the making of Linseed Oil, Varnishes, Japans, and Colors first brought the writer into daily contact with questions te garding the manipulation of paint, its properties, and the results of the various operations to which it was sub jected. Painters, engineers, architects, builders, con structors, etc have since been continuously asking questions whose answers involved thought and experi ment. At one time paintmaking was an art, then it became a trick, now it is a science. This little handbook is writ ten by a paintmaker, and is the direct result of study recently given to the manufacture and properties of structural steel and the use of paint in its preservation. It is published in the hope that some of the mysteries heretofore associated with the paint business may be cleared up. Excerpt from Cambria Steel, 1901: A Handbook of Information Relating to Structural Steel Manufactured by the Cambria Steel Co Our Beams and Channels are made to conform to the American Standards, adopted January, 1896, in which the flanges have a uniform slope of one to six, and the dimensions, proportions and weights are determined by a regular schedule, as shown on the diagrams on pagel 22 and 28. The standard proportions of beams and channels are further shown on Plate 24. The principal structural angles now made are limited in number to conform to the American Standards, adopted December, 18m, and include eleven base, or a total of seventy-three, sizes for equal leg angles, and nine base, or a total of eighty-six, sizes of unequal leg angles, all varying in thickness by one-sixteenth inch, as shown on Plates 12 and 14 and tables herein. It is believed that these standard angles include a sufficient range of sizes to meet all usual structural require ments, but at the same time we will continue the manufacture of angles of special sizes and proportions for those who require them, as shown on Plates 18 and 15. Genre: Technology & Engineering
ISBN: 9780666917423

Excerpt from Steel Rails: Their History, Properties, Strength and Manufacture, With Notes on the Principles of Rolling Stock and Track Design IN this work the author has endeavored to systematize the knowledge in existence upon the subject, and to present in a concise yet clear form the most important features of the problem. The first chapter treats of the development of the present design of section with a comparison of the American rails with those in use on English Railways and on the Continent. In chapters two to five, inclusive, the external forces acting on the rail and the corresponding stresses they produce in the rail are discussed. The necessity and desire for information on this subject are widespread. While a considerable amount of general information is to be found scattered through the technical press and in the proceedings of the various Railway Associations and Engineering Societies, yet very little has been published dealing broadly with the principles of design of the rail in reference to the rolling stock and track structure. In recent years much thought has been given to the manufacture of rail steel, and investigators, it would seem, have turned their attention more to an examination of the various defects found in the process of manufacture than to the study of the duty of the rail.
