Excerpt from The Maniacs, or Fantasia of Bos Bibens: Characteristic of Some of the Fanatics, Who Are Conspiring the Ruin of Their Country at Home The idol, Popularity! Alone, is the demon that stirs up the whole soul of these men to excite the misguided people of Britain to cry out'for the emancipation of west-india slaves who, if they were suffered to know the truth, they would find to be, far more comfortably provided for, and far more happy than millions of their own most desolate and wretched poor. If this presumption were not true; and if sweet soothing Charity! Dwelt on their hearts; would they not endeavour to assuage the sufferings of their own wretched countrymen, who die by hundreds from cold, starvation, and every species of wretchedness and misery? When these are all made comfortable, and happy; and enlightened; then, may they look around, and try to humanize the sooty sons of Africa; but, till then, their pretensions must be deemed, instead of charity and love, the dark works of hypocrisy and deceit.
