Excerpt from The Making of the New Testament The New Testament presents the paradox of a literature born of protest against the tyranny of a canon, yet ultimately canonized itself through an increasing demand for/ external authority. This paradox is full of significance. We must examine it more closely. The work of Jesus was a consistent effort} to set religion free from the deadening system of the scribes. He was conscious of a direct, divine authority. The broken lights of former inspiration are lost in the full dawn of God's presence to His soul. Excerpt from The Story of the Revised New Testament: American Standard Edition It was necessary in telling this story to begin at the inception of the movement for Revision. Hence this little book repeats many facts that were published when, and immediately after, the Revised New Testa ment of 1881 appeared. But another gener ation has grown up since that date, and much well known to Biblical scholars will be new to most readers to - day. Yet, even in telling of the labors before 1881, the writer, from his connection with the American Company of New Testament Revisers, has been able to include many facts not known to the general public. The account of the preparation of the Standard Edition of the American Revised New Testament has never been published before, and the writer has found, from many letters of inquiry, that little is known about the details. The same inquiries indicate a desire to learn the facts as here briefly presented. Thirty-five years have passed since the work began, and this sketch has been penned in the desire and hope of making these long years of labor. Excerpt from The Evolution of the New Testament The little volume which we call the New Testament has had more influence on the world than the whole literature of England or France. It consists of twenty-seven books, written eighteen centuries ago, in a degenerate form of Greek, by authors of Jewish race and scanty learning. Nevertheless, millions of persons still turn to the New Testament for guidance and for consolation. Such persons should surely wish to know in what order and in what circumstances these twenty-seven books were written; how many of them may be assigned to their traditional authors; what motives animated these men; whether any of the books are compilations from earlier documents; and how they came to occupy their unique position among Christian writings. Such questions will also interest, if to a less degree, those who reject Christianity, but are yet too wise to neglect or despise a literature merely because they do not share the views which it expresses. Moreover, we have here to do with a literature which has been the textbook of that religion on which modern civilization has to a great extent been built up, a religion which remains to-day one of the greatest of living forces. Many of the critics who in modern times have thrown light on the New Testament have themselves been unbelievers; but they have realized that the subject is one of profound interest and importance, and they have devoted immense learning and ability to its elucidation. Forty years ago some of these critics attributed most of the New Testament books to unknown writers of the second century, but it is now generally agreed that this attribution was based on insufficient grounds. Excerpt from The Formation of the New Testament About fourteen years ago, while a student in Union Theological Seminary, I began a study of the ante-nicene Fathers, with a view to discover ing the forces and aims that caused the Christian Church to form a New Testament. I submitted an essay at that time, for which I was awarded the prize in New Testament Introduction. A few years later I read a paper on the same sub ject before the American Society of Church His tory. While a pastor in New Haven I did some work in the library of Yale University, especially on the fragments of Heracleon's Commentary of John, preserved for us by Origen, on the ground of authority underlying the Christianity of Clement of Alexandria, and on several other subjects closely related to this discussion. These chapters are a reproduction, with the necessary revision and enlargement, of a series of articles bearing the same title that appeared in The Disciple of Christ in 1884. That publication is not now living, but the thanks of the author are tendered to its publishers for permission to use these articles for the present purpose. The object and point of view of this second series of chapters are adequately stated in the introduction. Excerpt from The Origin of the New Testament This does not impugn the religious value of the New Testament, or affect the sublimity of its ideas. But it is really quite plain that the ques tion as to the origin of the New Testament is a historical, and a purely historical question. Excerpt from The First Printed English New Testament At the outset, however, we must limit this testimony to these first two editions only. Afterwards came 'thicker and threefold' into England, editions both of the New Testament and of the Bible. Some of these attempted an accurate authenticity, being produced solely from a love to God and Truth others were surreptitiously and often carelessly produced by speculators, for the mere sake of money. All these can only be rightly analysed and adjudged in a thorough and complete History of the English Bible, both manuscript and printed.' A work yet to be written; though the way has been made smoother by such pioneers as Rev. J. Fqrshall, Sir F. Madden; Revs. J. Lewis, H. Cotton, Canon B. F. West cott Messrs. Lea wilson, C. Anderson, G. Offor, F. Fry, and others. Such a work would be based upon deep sacred interest. It would record a marvellous story of human heroism and self denial, of untiring effort and labour. It would catalogue all known editions, all accessnble early copies, and point out their various difl'erences. And, with it, would be largely in terwoven the political and social history of what may be looked upon as our Biblical Century - that hundred years, roughly speakin of incessant Biblical translation and revision, which was crowned wit]? That literary marvel, the present authorized version. What Froude has done for the Court and Political History of our Reformation what Macaulay for twenty years later on in our National History; might, with even a more interesting subject - the most interesting of all literary subjects to many - be done for the Story of the Word of God in English. Is any man so bold, so earnest, so devout, as to attempt this work i In adducing this Testimony from original sources, and in eliminating it from the confusion of many conflicting and perplexing statements, it will be convenient to quote each passage, once for all, in its principal place though it may occasionally anticipate somewhat in time, or contain traneous matter.
