With an introduction by W. Axl Rose Del James unleashes an extraordinary collection of snapshots from hell—our hell. Here are spine-chilling stories of everyday people, all caught up in terrible urges—sex and obsession, addiction and violence—all sharing the universal language of fear. . . . A heavy-metal dreamer locked in a savage war with his television set. An artist seduced by a vampire. Two boys trapped by an urban legend come to life—or a drug-induced nightmare. A modern-day gladiator engaged in a brutal death match. A rock-and-roll star who years to be with the one good woman he has ever known—and so ignites a blaze of mad destruction. Praise for The Language of Fear “The Language of Fear is spoken in tunes of rock'n'roll, of barking dogs and net-trapped fish, of acid-sizzled flesh and tattoo needles, and after these few lessons, you'll speak it too.”—Cemetery Dance “Pissed-off, heartbroken rock'n'roll horror: surprisingly tender, garage-band crude, savage as a shotgun blast and audacious as an exit wound.”—John Skipp “After a hard day in Hell, James writes down what he saw. Good reading.”—John Shirley “Best described as an updated Night Shift, the contemporary tales [are] short and nasty.”—Cindy Baum, Scream Magazine

This book investigates linguistic strategies of threat construction and fear generation in contemporary public communication, including state political discourse as well as non-governmental, media and institutional discourses. It describes the ways in which the construction of closeness and remoteness can be manipulated in the public sphere and bound up with fear, security and conflict. Featuring a series of case studies in different domains, from presidential speeches to environmental discourse, it demonstrates how political and organizational leaders enforce the imminence of an outside threat to claim legitimization of preventive policies. It reveals that the best legitimization effects are obtained by discursively constructed fear appeals, which ensure quick social mobilization. The scope of the book is of immediate concern in the modern globalized era where borders and distance dissolve and are re-imagined. It will appeal to students and researchers in linguistics, discourse analysis, media communication as well as social and political sciences.

The constant playback of "What the hell are you doing with your life?" was my 3 am monster that woke me up daily and kept me from having a full night's sleep. Why was I unable to find my life's purpose while others around me seemed to be doing that just fine?Fear crept in daily, overwhelming me with confusion and second-guessing every decision I was about to make. You are not good enough, not educated enough, not interesting or important enough, and mostly I heard "you are not enough."The messages at 3 am were a constant playback in my mind until I started to listen to what they were saying. I began to question how all this self-doubt arrived in my life after all and began to do the work that required me to put my ear to my heart. In Thank You, Fear - I'll Take It From Here, I share my journey from being locked in my self-sabotage to unlocking my true potential. I did this by listening to the real message I was receiving from my fear. The messages of "you are not good enough" began to fade as I uncovered the power within the passage. The messages were my higher self nudging me towards greatness. Once I began to see the opportunities unfold in front of me by embracing the fear, I had a deeper understanding of truly knowing what my higher self was leading me toward - greatness.Fear has the power we give it. We can take an opportunity and attach fear to it, or we can take an opportunity and see possibilities, it's a choice. We can own our greatness and step into the unknown with courage and self-confidence or we can choose self-sabotage and defeatism.Thank You, Fear - I'll Take It From Here is an opportunity to:* Own your greatness* Unlock your true potential* Live your life authenticallyby learning the language of fear and deciding how to interpret it. Leaning into the discomfort is the beginning of great opportunity, adventure, and living your life's purpose.

This book proposes a new theory (“proximization theory”) in the area of political/public legitimization discourse. Located at the intersection of Pragmatics, Cognitive Linguistics and critical approaches, the theory holds that legitimization of broadly consequential political/public policies, such as pre-emptive interventionist campaigns, is best accomplished by forced construals of virtual external threats encroaching upon the speaker and her audience’s home territory. The construals, which proceed along spatial, temporal and axiological lines, are forced by strategic deployment of lexico-grammatical choices drawn from the three domains. This proposal is illustrated primarily in the in-depth analysis of the 2001-2010 US discourse of the War-on-Terror, and secondarily in a number of pilot studies pointing to a wide range of further applications (environmental discourse, health communication, cyber-threat discourse, political party-representation). The theory and the empirical focus of the book will appeal to researchers working on interdisciplinary projects in Pragmatics, Semantics, Cognitive Linguistics, Critical Discourse Studies, as well as Journalism and Media Studies.

Our world has increasingly become fear based, but we don't understand the sources of this fear so that we can heal them. We have collective fears we each hold, such as dying from a pandemic, and we have individual fears we hold, many of which we are not aware of because they arise from conditioning and deeply embedded beliefs. We are meant to live in joy, not fear, and A Book About Fear will help us do this by taking us on a treetop journey through quantum physics, psychology, philosophy, spirituality, and more. When we see how our belief systems were created, how they limit us, and what we have become attached to that creates fear, we will come to know ourselves at a deeper level. Then we can make different choices to transform our fears, which will uncover our intrinsic joy.
