Suppose your natural biological design includes a hidden blueprint of your body's functioning and vitality. Suppose this blueprint could warn you before health problems or illness actually occur without expensive or invasive laboratory testing. Suppose this blueprint is universal and extends to every man, woman, and child. What if you discovered the key that translates this metabolic text, knowing that it is available to anyone who is trained to read it? The Kortum Technique is a Visual Assessment Process that decodes the metabolic bonds that relate to biology and well-being. It translates the body's own vocabulary of health data, which appears in a visible lexicon of symbols that are known as "indicators." Read for yourself about this cutting-edge technique that allows easy access to some of the body's deepest secrets.

Reflectance spectroscopy is the investigation of the spectral composi tion of surface-reflected radiation with respect to its angularly dependent intensity and the composition of the incident primary radiation. Two limiting cases are important: The first concerns regular (specular) reflection from a smooth surface, and the second diffuse reflection from an ideal matte surface. All possible variations are found in practice between these two extremes. For the two extreme cases, two fundamentally different methods of reflectance spectroscopy are employed: The first of these consists in evaluating the optical constants n (refractive index) and x (absorption index) from the measured regular reflection by means of the Fresnel equations as a function of the wave A. This rather old and very troublesome procedure, which is length incapable of very accurate results, has recently been modified by Fahren fort by replacing the air-sample phase boundary by the phase boundary between a dielectric of higher refractive index (n ) and the sample (n ). 1 2 If the sample absorbs no radiation and the angle of incidence exceeds a certain definite value, total reflection occurs. On close optical contact between the two phases, a small amount of energy is transferred into the less dense phase because of diffraction phenomena at the edges of the incident beam. The energy flux in the two directions through the phase boundary caused by this is equal, however, so that 'total reflection takes place.

From a study of knowledge of the sea among indigenous cultures in the South Seas to inquiries into the subject of sea monsters, from studies of Pacific currents to descriptions of ocean-going research vessels, the sixty-three essays presented here reflect the scientific complexity and richness of social relationships that characterize ocean-ographic history. Based on papers presented at the Fifth International Congress on the History of Oceanography held at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (the first ICHO meeting following the cessation of the Cold War), the volume features an unusual breadth of contributions. Oceanography itself involves the full spectrum of physical, biological, and earth sciences in their formal, empirical, and applied manifestations. The contributors to Oceanographic History: The Pacific and Beyond undertake the interdisciplinary task of telling the story of oceanography’s past, drawing on diverse methodologies. Their essays explore the concepts, techniques, and technologies of oceanography, as well as the social, economic, and institutional determinants of oceanographic history. Although focused on the Pacific, the geographic range of subjects is global and includes Micronesia, East Africa, and Antarctica; the bathymetric range comprises inshore fisheries, coral reefs, and the "azoic zone." The seventy-one contributors represent every continent of the globe except Antarctica, bringing together material on the history of oceanography never before published.

Usability Assessment is a concise volume for anyone requiring knowledge and practice in assessing the usability of any type of product, tool, or system before it is launched. It provides a brief history and rationale for conducting usability assessments and examples of how usability assessment methods have been applied, takes readers step by step through the process, highlights challenges and special cases, and offers real-life examples. By the end of the book, readers will have the knowledge and skills they need to conduct their own usability assessments without requiring that they read textbooks or attend workshops. This book will be valuable for undergraduate and graduate students; practitioners; usability professionals; human-computer interaction professionals; researchers in fields such as industrial design, industrial/organizational psychology, and computer science; and those working in a wide range of content domains, such as health care, transportation, product design, aerospace, and manufacturing.

As technology expands and evolves, one-dimensional, graphical user interface (GUI) design becomes increasingly limiting and simplistic. Designers must meet the challenge of developing new and creative interfaces that adapt to meet human needs and technological trends. HCI Beyond the GUI provides designers with this know how by exploring new ways to reach users that involve all of the human senses. Dr. Kortum gathers contributions from leading human factors designers to present a single reference for professionals, researchers, and students. - Explores the human factors involved in the design and implementation of the nontraditional interfaces, detailing design strategies, testing methodologies, and implementation techniques - Provides an invaluable resource for practitioners who design interfaces for children, gamers and users with accessibility needs - Offers extensive case studies, examples and design guidelines

Certified flower essence practitioner Deborah Craydon and licensed acupuncturist Warren Bellows combine their expertise to present an innovative and highly effective holistic method to treat body, mind, and spirit. By applying flower essences (in place of needles) to acupuncture points, it is possible to stimulate the movement of energy (chi), starting a powerful healing process. Filled with full-color photography, this practical manual, suitable for both professional and home use, includes treatments for common ailments, such as depression, anxiety, and loneliness. The authors also explain the theory behind this technique and provide general instructions for application of flower essence tinctures, creating a comprehensive view of this exciting new form of alternative healing. The first guidebook to show how to apply the flower essences of Dr. Bach to acupuncture points for treatment of emotional and physical conditions, such as depression, anxiety, neck and shoulder pain, and headaches—without the use of needles. Bach flower essences can be purchased in most health food stores and homeopathic pharmacies and are safe for use on children, pregnant women, the elderly, and pets. Includes more that 50 full-color instructional photographs.

"I have spent my whole professional life as an international economist thinking and writing about economic geography, without being aware of it," begins Paul Krugman in the readable and anecdotal style that has become a hallmark of his writings. Krugman observes that his own shortcomings in ignoring economic geography have been shared by many professional economists, primarily because of the lack of explanatory models. In Geography and Trade he provides a stimulating synthesis of ideas in the literature and describes new models for implementing a study of economic geography that could change the nature of the field. Economic theory usually assumes away distance. Krugman argues that it is time to put it back - that the location of production in space is a key issue both within and between nations.
