There are artists whose métier is the observation or documentation of the world, and artists who set the world aside altogether to build their own visionary cosmology, designing its constituent parts from scratch as a personal mythology relayed in motifs. Paul Klee (1879-1940) was such an artist, as his aphorism "Art does not reproduce the visible, rather it makes visible" testifies, and The Klee Universe addresses his work from this perspective. In 1906, Klee noted in his diary, "All will be Klee," and in 1911, as the encyclopedist of his cosmos, he began to meticulously chronicle his works in a catalogue that, by the time he died, was to contain more than 9,000 items. Here, in the fashion of an Orbis Pictus or a Renaissance emblem book, Klee's oeuvre is made legible as a cogent entirety, in thematic units address: the human life cycle, from birth and childhood to sexual desire, parenthood and death; music, architecture, theater and religion; plants, animals and landscapes; and, finally, darker, destructive forces in the shape of war, fear and death. The Klee Universe reimagines the artist as a Renaissance man, an artist of great learning whose cosmos proves to be a coherent system of ideas and images. Paul Klee (1879-1940) was born and died in Switzerland, though he never obtained Swiss citizenship. Technically of German nationality, he taught at the Bauhaus from 1921 to 1926, alongside Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc and others. Seventeen of his works were included in the Nazi's infamous 1937 Munich exhibition of "degenerate art."

The fact that Paul Klee (1879–1940) consistently intertwined the visual and the verbal in his art has long fascinated commentators from Walter Benjamin to Michel Foucault. However, the questions it prompts have never been satisfactorily answered—until now. In Paul Klee, Annie Bourneuf offers the first full account of the interplay between the visible and the legible in Klee’s works from the 1910s and 1920s. Bourneuf argues that Klee joined these elements to invite a manner of viewing that would unfold in time, a process analogous to reading. From his elaborate titles to the small scale he favored to his metaphoric play with materials, Klee created forms that hover between the pictorial and the written. Through his unique approach, he subverted forms of modernist painting that were generally seen to threaten slow, contemplative viewing. Architectures of Transversality investigates the relationship between modernity, space, power, and culture in Iran. Focusing on Paul Klee’s Persian-inspired miniature series and Louis Kahn’s unbuilt blueprint for a democratic public space in Tehran, it traces the architectonics of the present as a way of moving beyond universalist and nationalist accounts of modernism. Transversality is a form of spatial production and practice that addresses the three important questions of the self, objects, and power. Using Deleuzian and Heideggerian theory, the book introduces the practices of Klee and Kahn as transversal spatial responses to the dialectical tension between existential and political territories and, in doing so, situates the history of the silent, unrepresented and the unbuilt – constructed from the works of Klee and Kahn – as a possible solution to the crisis of modernity and identity-based politics in Iran.

The book presents a discussion about the process of artistic creation in the diversity of its manifestations: visual arts, literature, theater, cinema, etc. The proposed reflections are supported by research dedicated to the study of these creative paths, from the documents left by the artists, such as diaries, notes, sketches, drafts, mock-ups, projects, scripts and contacts. Dialogues were established between the observation of recurrent aspects in a great diversity of processes and the thought of Charles S. Peirce, generating a possible theory of creation. First, the Unfinished Gesture discusses the aesthetics of the creative movement from a semiotic perspective. In this theoretical context creation is described as a fallible process with tendencies, supported by the logic of uncertainty, encompassing the intervention of chance and opening space for the introduction of new ideas. A continuous course in which you can not determine either a starting point or an end point.. These uncertain and indeterminate tendencies direct the artist in his search for the construction of works that satisfy his great poetic project, which is also strongly influenced by communicative issues. The search of the artist finds its possible concreteness, in complex processes of constructions of works. In a second moment, the creative path is focused from five points of view, as: transforming action, translation movement, knowledge process, construction of artistic truths and experimentation course. In the Epilogue are presented the concepts of Peircean semiotics, which base the reflections on the artistic creation developed throughout the book. The Unfinished Gesture aims to offer a critical approach to the arts, from the point of view of its production processes.
