Excerpt from The Jerusalem Delivered of Torquato Tasso, Vol. 1 of 2: Translated Into English Verse If the magnitude of the undertaking be in itself sufficient reason for abstaining from any further notice of his life, the same consideration restrains me from making any but the slightest allusion to his immortal work, which, as has been well Observed, whether we regard the magnificence of its language, its moral grandeur, the chivalrous self-devotion of its heroes, or the sanctity and sublimity of its subject, may well sustain comparison with either of the two great poems of antiquity, and is, beyond question, t/ze epic of modern times. We may search in vain through the pages of Homer or Virgil for any character possessing equal interest with that of its hero, Godfred, whose affections, warm and ennobling as they are, appear to be obliterated by the perpetual sense of a sacred duty superior to them all. He is the personification of the Church militant combating for its Saviour's cause. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Jerusalem Delivered of Torquato Tasso, Vol. 1 of 2: Translated Into English Spenserian Verse, With a Life of the Author Might not have been an uninteresting addition, but this has been already given to a considerable extent; and were it otherwise, the undertaking would be inconsistent with my views in having embodied the work in its present form and size, with the same embellishments, and without any material omission of matter in the much more ex pensive original edition.
