Therefore, it extensively investigates this voluntarily concept, which focuses on the commitment to social, environmental and economic responsibility from different angles. At first, the paper analyses the conceptual development, as well as the different understandings of CSR and its demarcation from related terms. It describes in detail the common principles and guidelines underlying the concept of CSR as a legal basis and furthermore, it expands explicitly the main dimensions of CSR. The present study primarily aims to give an overview of the pros and cons of CSR and the impact of its implementation on international corporations. In the absence of an unanimously agreement, the discussion regarding this issue is still going on between corporations, interest groups, states and business institutions all over the world. Finally, this Master’s thesis particularly examines the approach to CSR in the Republic of South Africa as a currently significant emerging market. Due to the nation’s challenging historical background, its government launched a programme, namely the Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) and in further development the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE), to redress the inequalities of apartheid. The depletion of South Africa’s (and in some cases the world’s) natural resources and the degradation of environmental sinks (including the atmosphere, lakes and rivers, and land) are continuing at such a rate that natural resource prices are climbing and many critical ecosystem services that underpin human welfare are increasingly threatened. How can Africa, the world’s most lagging region, benefit from globalisation and achieve sustained economic growth? Africa needs greater investment by Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) to improve competitiveness and generate more growth through positive spill-over effects. Despite the fact that Africa’s returns on investment averaged 29% since 1990, Africa has gained merely 1% of global Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flows. The challenge for African countries is how to be a more desirable destination for FDI. The study integrates three currents of economic research, namely from the literature on (endogenous) economic growth, convergence and regional integration, the explanations for Africa’s poor growth and the growing understanding of the role of MNEs in a global economy. The empirical side of the book is based on an econometric study of the determinants of FDI in Africa as well as a detailed firm-level survey conducted in 2000.
