Excerpt from The History and Antiquities of the Cathedral Church of Hereford: Illustrated by a Series of Engravings of Views, Elevations, and Plans of That Edifice; With Biographical Anecdotes of Eminent Persons Connected With the Establishment IN all antiquarian and historical narratives it is very desirable to trace every fact, or presumed fact, to its source - to ascertain the true origin and commencement of a see, a state, or an invention which by time and progressive improvement has grown to importance and greatness; but, unfortunately, our curiosity is seldom satisfied on these points. Antiquaries, perhaps, more than any other class of writers, are destined to explore the dark and obscure labyrinths of legendary story, - the credulous relations of one annalist, and the misstatements of another till they mistrust the accuracy and fidelity of every one. An endeavour to verify the date of the first establishment of Christianity in this part Of Britain, and to fix the foundation of the See and enthronement of the first pr'elate, shew how extremely difficult it is to arrive'at facts, and to obtain satisfactory evidence. It is net sufficient that a 'cloistered chronicler of the tenth century states on his parchment roll. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
