Spynx, Kentucky A small, mysterious town that serves as the common meeting ground for a trio of boys who have never seen each other anywhere but in their dreams. Tray Baker has a demon living under his bed. Kane Trent hasn't spoken a word in six months. Gamble York has just been pushed from a moving car. These are just small distractions to overcome in preparation for the final battle with their worst fear. Strangers, yet closest friends, they must discover how to grab hold of their fear and drain all of its energy before the fear feeds and grows from their own terror. Together, yet alone, they must defeat the unknown that waits behind the closed door. "There are many doors in life. Doors that you must open in order to mature and enter the next stage in life. Once you open a door, it changes you forever and there's no closing it again. Some doors are unlocked. Some doors require you to find the key to unlock. And sometimes, you open a door that you wish you could lock back and never look upon again." When the summer begins, life will never be the same for the troika.

The cerebral cortex, especially that part customarily designated "neocortex," is one of the hallmarks of mammalian evolution and reaches its greatest size, relatively speaking, and its widest structural diversity in the human brain. The evolution of this structure, as remarkable for the huge numbers of neurons that it contains as for the range of behaviors that it controls, has been of abiding interest to many generations of neuroscientists. Yet few theories of cortical evo lution have been proposed and none has stood the test of time. In particular, no theory has been successful in bridging the evolutionary gap that appears to exist between the pallium of non mammalian vertebrates and the neocortex of mam mals. Undoubtedly this stems in large part from the rapid divergence of non mammalian and mammalian forms and the lack of contemporary species whose telencephalic wall can be seen as having transitional characteristics. The mono treme cortex, for example, is unquestionably mammalian in organization and that of no living reptile comes close to resembling it. Yet anatomists such as Ramon y Cajal, on examining the finer details of cortical structure, were struck by the similarities in neuronal form, particularly of the pyramidal cells, and their predisposition to laminar alignment shared by representatives of all vertebrate classes.

The extremely labile nature of the nervous system has proved an intriguing area of research for over thirty years. From the earliest stages of neuronal growth during development, both the morphology and strength of neuronal connections within the central nervous system are shaped and modified by experience. While connections between neurons that are continually stimulated are strengthened, redundant connections weaken and are eventually lost. The Mutable Brain provides a comprehensive introduction to plasticity of the brain and neural circuits whilst covering the history of neurological research, from early work on the developing visual system, right through to current state-of-the-art molecular techniques. Authored by leading researchers in the field, it address a range of research areas, including ongoing research on the behavioural significance of hippocampal plasticity, the mediation of avian vocal learning by neural plasticity and the dynamicity of the somatosensory system with its multi-hierarchical interactions. Together, these chapters provide a broad, introductory overview of current views on neuronal plasticity.

Harry grows up a happy rabbit with lots of friends to play with. As he gets older, a funny thing happens. Harry gets hairier and hairier until his friends start making fun of him. They taunt Harry for being different, and he soon feels like he has no friends at all. Then, something terrible happens to Henry the hare, and “hairy” Harry comes to his rescue. Despite his friends being mean, Harry chooses to be kind and helpful. His actions make the other rabbits realize it doesn’t matter what they look like, but it does matter how they treat each other. Sadly, many children today experience bullying in a variety of forms. Harry: The Very Hairy Hare is about overcoming bullying through kindness and acts of love. We’re all responsible for our words and actions, so instead of being cruel, smile, share a kind word, and do a good deed.
