Excerpt from The Gold Miners: A Sequel to the Pathless WestThe remoteness, the mere inaccessibility of the Fraser with its golden sands, added a charm - were in some strange way regarded as evidence of a rich region, - for the North ever lured the miner, as the West lured the mariner.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Rediscovering the British World is one part of an ongoing attempt to approach British Imperial history from a different viewpoint, placing the colonies of settlement at the centre. Editors Phillip Buckner and Douglas Francis have included nineteen essays from expert scholars in the field, which cover a broad range of cultural, social, and intellectual topics in British imperial history from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. The essays focus on the history of Britain and the Empire, with considerable emphasis on the self-governing dominions of Canada, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. They attempt to show the centrality of the Empire in the history of the nations created by the British diaspora overseas, while at the same time calling into question the extent of the existence of a "British World." The goal is not to wax nostalgic, but rather to re-examine the complex phenomenon of this far-reaching empire and to shed light on the ways in which it has shaped our world. Many Canadian women fiction writers have become justifiably famous. But what about women who have written non-fiction? When Anne Innis Dagg set out on a personal quest to make such non-fiction authors better known, she expected to find just a few dozen. To her delight, she unearthed 473 writers who have produced over 674 books. These women describe not only their country and its inhabitants, but a remarkable variety of other subjects: from the story of transportation to the legacy of Canadian missionary activity around the world. While most of the writers lived in what is now Canada, other authors were British or American travellers who visited Canada throughout the years and reported on what they found here. This compendium has brief biographies of all these women, short descriptions of their books, and a comprehensive index of their books’ subject matters. The Feminine Gaze: A Canadian Compendium of Non-Fiction Women Authors and Their Books, 1836-1945 will be an invaluable research tool for women’s studies and for all who wish to supplement the male gaze on Canada’s past.

Critically acclaimed since its publication in 1991, the BC history of choice has now been revised. Here is the story of Canada's westernmost province, beginning at the point of contact between Native peoples and Europeans and continuing up to 1995. Jean Barman tells the story by focusing not only on the history made by leaders in government but also by including the roles of women, immigrants, and Native peoples. She interweaves political, social, economic, and demographic events into an absorbing account that reveals the roots of contemporary British Columbia in all its diversity and apparent contradictions. The revised edition has been updated to include information from the 1991 census and revisions have been made throughout the book, including the references, to update it to 1995.
