This volume is a surname study of the Gilbert and Hopkins families of Messick, Poquoson, York County, Virginia. Every census record from 1790 to 1910 known to pertain to these Poquoson families has been abstracted and cited. The current volume brings each family from its earliest mention in the colonial era down to the present. Many female lines have been followed for one or more generations, but most female lines have not been followed for more than one or two generations. The text is well illustrated with early photographs and includes a bibliography and an index of every individual known to be related by birth or marriage to the families studied in this volume. Most of the family photographs in this volume have never before been published. This is Mr. Willett's tenth volume of family history, and his seventh volume on the Messick area of Poquoson, York County, Virginia. Excerpt from Hopkins of Virginia and Related Families Particular attention has been given to the earlier generations and no attempt has been made to give full genealogies of all the families treated in the book. However, a foundation is laid upon which each descendant may build and attach his own line to the main stem of the branches mentioned herein. Due to the frequent duplication of names among contemporaries, the very little which has been printed on the families, and the de struction of many priceless county and private records in Virginia, especially in the eastern part of the state, by the Federal Army during the War Between the States, the work is naturally not free from errors; however, every effort has been made to insureits accuracy. Rl'he reader must bear in mind that the writer is not a genealogist, and that these records were collected during the spare moments of his busy life. It is unlikely that the first edition of any work on genealogy is free from mistakes, for the compiler of a genealogy, to a great extent, must be guided by what the members of the families send him, and this is often incorrect; consequently, the compiler can only be guided by his best judgment, trusting to future historians to discover any errors and to correct them. This volume will be of great interest to anyone with Poquoson, York County, Virginia ancestors, and to any library, society or archive that collects Virginia related material. This work greatly expands on the Holloway, Messick and Linton chapters of the Poquoson Watermen (pub. 1988). The Holloway family came to the Jamestown Colony in the 1620s, and eventually settled in what is now Poquoson, (then) York County, Virginia. The Messick and Linton families came before the War of 1812. Every census record from 1790 to 1910 known to pertain to these Poquoson families has been abstracted and cited. The current volume brings each family from its earliest mention in the colonial era down to the present. Many female lines have been followed for one or more generations. Most of the family photographs in this volume have never before been published. This is Mr. Willett's seventh volume of family history, and his fourth volume on the Messick area of Poquoson, York County, Virginia. Mr. Willett is related to most of the Poquoson families through his maternal Martin and Hopkins ancestors; he is a family history researcher and recognized authority on the Willett surname and on his maternal families of Poquoson, York County, Virginia.
