First Published in 1983. The papers in this volume were originally presented at a conference on The Future of Electronic Learning held at Teachers College, Columbia University in April of 1982, sponsored by the Electronic Learning Laboratory. Each paper has been revised for a reading audience rather than a listening audience, but the original questions from the audience and their answers have been retained as they give a sense of the conference and provide interesting information. The sub-title of the conference was Implications for Psychology and Education. The reader will find that the papers address both the new kinds of learning that will develop as a result of learning from electronic technology, as well as the new forms of teaching that will be needed. The purpose of the conference was to bring together an unusual group of experts who could address these questions for the future with special knowledge of the technology combined with a concern for education.

Simulations and the Future of Learning offers trainers and educators the information and perspective they need to understand, design, build, and deploy computer simulations for this generation. Looking back on his recent first-hand experience as lead designer for an advanced leadership development simulation, author Clark Aldrich has created a detailed case study of the creation and deployment of an e-learning simulation that had the development cycle of a modern computer game. With this book Aldrich, a leader in the e-learning field, has created an intriguing roadmap for the future of learning while taking us along on an entertaining rollercoaster ride of trial and error, success and failure. Simulations and the Future of Learning outlines the design principles and critical decisions around any simulation's components— the interface, the physics and animation systems, the artificial intelligence, and sets and figures. Using this accessible resource, readers will learn how to create and evaluate successful simulations that have the following characteristics: authentic and relevant scenarios; applied pressure situations that tap user's emotion and force them to act; a sense of unrestricted options; and replayability.

This book shares insights into the various ways technology can be used for educational purposes, utilizing an approach suitable for both novice and advanced practitioners in this niche area. It features selected papers presented at the International Conference on e-Learning 2015 (ICeL 2015), where professionals discussed how technology can not only serve as a tool in the classroom, but as the classroom itself. As the title “Envisioning the Future of Online Learning” suggests, this book showcases current best practices in the field of e-learning, where technology has been leveraged to re-engineer the landscape of education, particularly in the context of Malaysia.

Unequal distribution of wealth, poverty, pollution, and gender inequality are just a few of the problems we face and struggle to eliminate. Sustainable development offers a long-term holistic solution to these problems through meeting the needs of the current generation without endangering the capability of future generations in meeting their own needs. Sustainable education or education for sustainability is a transformative learning paradigm that prepares learners and provides them with knowledge, ethical awareness, skills, values, and attitudes to achieve sustainable goals. Global Approaches to Sustainability Through Learning and Education is a comprehensive academic publication that facilitates a greater understanding of sustainable development and fosters a culture of sustainability through learning and education. Highlighting a range of topics such as ethics, game-based learning, and knowledge management, this book is ideal for teachers, environmentalists, higher education faculty, activists, curriculum developers, academicians, researchers, professionals, administrators, and policymakers.

This book reviews a blend of artificial intelligence (AI) approaches that can take e-learning to the next level by adding value through customization. It investigates three methods: crowdsourcing via social networks; user profiling through machine learning techniques, and personal learning portfolios using learning analytics. Technology and education have drawn closer together over the years as they complement each other within the domain of e-learning, and different generations of online education reflect the evolution of new technologies as researcher and developers continuously seek to optimize the electronic medium to enhance the effectiveness of e-learning. Artificial intelligence (AI) for e-learning promises personalized online education through a combination of different intelligent techniques that are grounded in established learning theories while at the same time addressing a number of common e-learning issues. This book is intended for education technologists and e-learning researchers as well as for a general readership interested in the evolution of online education based on techniques like machine learning, crowdsourcing, and learner profiling that can be merged to characterize the future of personalized e-learning.

In this report, Cathy Davidson and David Theo Goldberg focus on the potential for shared and interactive learning made possible by the Internet. They argue that the single most important characteristic of the Internet is its capacity for world-wide community and the limitless exchange of ideas. The Internet brings about a way of learning that is not new or revolutionary but is now the norm for today's graduating high school and college classes. It is for this reason that Davidson and Goldberg call on us to examine potential new models of digital learning and rethink our virtually enabled and enhanced learning institutions. Educational systems worldwide are facing an enormous shift as a result of sociocultural, political, economic, and technological changes. The technologies and practices that have developed over the last decade have been heralded as opportunities to transform both online and traditional education systems. While proponents of these new ideas often postulate that they have the potential to address the educational problems facing both students and institutions and that they could provide an opportunity to rethink the ways that education is organized and enacted, there is little evidence of emerging technologies and practices in use in online education. Because researchers and practitioners interested in these possibilities often reside in various disciplines and academic departments the sharing and dissemination of their work across often rigid boundaries is a formidable task. Contributors to Emergence and Innovation in Digital Learning include individuals who are shaping the future of online learning with their innovative applications and investigations on the impact of issues such as openness, analytics, MOOCs, and social media. Building on work first published in Emerging Technologies in Distance Education, the contributors to this collection harness the dispersed knowledge in online education to provide a one-stop locale for work on emergent approaches in the field. Their conclusions will influence the adoption and success of these approaches to education and will enable researchers and practitioners to conceptualize, critique, and enhance their understanding of the foundations and applications of new technologies.
