Ever hear of a log-sawing ritual at a wedding ceremony? Or renting an apartment with kitchen space, but no kitchen? How about having to bring birthday cake to work on your own birthday? In The Frankfurt Files: Tales of an American in Germany, David Conte moves overseas to Frankfurt, Germany, so he can save his relationship with his girlfriend (now-wife). But when he later finds himself having to relearn life in a very different way, his storybook romance becomes one big lesson in surviving culture shock: hauling a couch up a flight of stairs alone after being abandoned by callous furniture movers; participating in civilized nudity at a local wellness center; addressing the all-important issue of cream cheese abuse in German sandwiches. As a discerning idealist turned maladroit idiot among foreigners, he relates the good, the bad, and the in-between of his offbeat encounters as an expatriate.

The Kreuzberg File is a cross between a thriller and a mystery. The action takes place in the recent past. The central character is the private investigator Bill McDonald, who works for a law firm in New York. Because of his knowledge of German, he is sent to Berlin when an important file, seemingly the property of his firm’s major client, is missing. The reader follows Bill’s perilous search for the missing file, which begins in Berlin and leads him to Frankfurt, Düsseldorf and Hamburg. Deadly violence becomes a regular part of his pursuit because a criminal organization is also looking for the data of innovative medical research contained in the file. What seems initially to be a straightforward job turns into a frustrating task because Bill finds out that he was never given the complete information about his case. There are moments when it is not even sure whether the file actually exists. Bill’s situation becomes very more tenuous when he realizes that he cannot fully trust his own employer. Against all odds, he succeeds to recover the file and can return it to its rightful owner, a small start-up in Berlin that did the original research.

"This book deals with the dilemma faced by multinational corporations when a United States court demands discovery of ESI that is protected in other countries. In fine detail the authors cover the full spectrum of possible responses, from evaluating the comparative costs of legal sanctions in a variety of major global jurisdictions to recognizing when to avoid litigation entirely. The tone throughout is eminently practical, specifying the precise nature and degree of risk involved and offering optimal solutions to all the conflicts likely to arise. On the theoretical side, the rationales of both the US e-discovery model and data privacy laws (focusing on the European data protection directive) are clearly explained"--P. [4] of cover.
