100 EXTRAORDINARY STORIES ABOUT ORDINARY THINGS SIGNIFICANT OBJECTS: A Literary and Economic Experiment Can a great story transform a worthless trinket into a significant object? The Significant Objects project set out to answer that question once and for all, by recruiting a highly impressive crew of creative writers to invent stories about an unimpressive menagerie of items rescued from thrift stores and yard sales. That secondhand flotsam definitely becomes more valuable: sold on eBay, objects originally picked up for a buck or so sold for thousands of dollars in total — making the project a sensation in the literary blogosphere along the way. But something else happened, too: The stories created were astonishing, a cavalcade of surprising responses to the challenge of manufacturing significance. Who would have believed that random junk could inspire so much imagination? The founders of the Significant Objects project, that’s who. This book collects 100 of the finest tales from this unprecedented creative experiment; you’ll never look at a thrift-store curiosity the same way again. The book provides a new look at the everyday relationship between psychological processes and extraordinary aspects of ordinary phenomena. Why should we deal with ordinary things? People’s life is made of everyday practical, taken-for-granted things, such as driving a car, using money, listening music, etc. When you drive from home to workplace, you are migrating between contexts. Is this an empty space you are crossing, or the time you spend into the car is something meaningful? In psychological terms, things have, at least, three levels of existence, a material, a symbolic and an affective one. The underlying idea is that the symbolic elaboration of everyday things is characterized by the transcendence of the particular object-sign, leading to the creation of more and more complex sign fields. These fields expand according to an inclusive logic up to dialogically and dialectically incorporate opposites (i.e. clean/dirty, transparent/opaque, hide/ show, join/divide, slow/fast, etc.). Even the meaning of “ordinary” and “extraordinary” follow such an inclusive logic: if you give a positive value to ordinary, extraordinary is rule-breaking; otherwise, if ordinary means trivial, extraordinary assumes a positive value. Besides, things are cultural artifacts mediating the experience of the world, the psychological processes and the construction of mind. Reflecting upon “things” is thus a more meaningful pathway to understand Psyche.

This book is a venture in the worlds of modeling and of metamodeling. At this point, I will not reveal to readers what constitutes metamodeling. Suf fice it to say that the pitfalls and shortcomings of modeling can be cured only if we resort to a higher level of inquiry called metainquiry and metadesign. We reach this level by the process of abstraction. The book contains five chapters from my previous work, Applied General Systems Theory (Harper and Row, London and New York, First Edition 1974, Second Edition 1978). More than ten years after its publication, this material still appears relevant to the main thrust of system design. This book is dedicated to all those who are involved in changing the world for the better. In a way we all are involved in system design: from the city manager who struggles with the problems of mass transportation or the consolidation of a city and its suburbs to the social worker who tries to provide benefits to the urban poor. It includes the engineer who designs the shuttle rockets. It involves the politician engaged in drafting a bill to recycle containers, or one to prevent pesticide contamination of our food. The politician might even need system design to chart his or her own re-election campaign.

In a realm where history murmured through ancient ruins, a band of nine youthful explorers embarked on a quest that would test their courage, intellect, and camaraderie. Their adventure began in the heart of a bustling metropolis, where they formed a club dedicated to unearthing the mysteries that lay beneath the surface. One fateful day, they stumbled upon a long-forgotten chart, a relic from a bygone era. Nestled in the depths of a venerable library, its intricate details and faded ink promised secrets yearning to be unveiled. Zanny, a whirlwind of curiosity, was the first to spot it, igniting a spark of excitement that spread through the group. At that moment, they fell silent, each lost in their own thoughts as if the map, with its faded ink and enigmatic symbols, had cast a spell over them. It was a call to adventure, a promise of secrets waiting to be uncovered. As the afternoon sun began its descent, casting long shadows across the library floor, they knew they couldn’t resist the allure of the unknown. The map had revealed its final destination: a perilous mountain pass, shrouded in legend and cloaked in perpetual snow. Its peak, a jagged tooth against the sky, was said to be the gateway to the lost city of Eldoria. The group finally left the library and soon arrived at its base, a contrasting crew of adventurers, their hearts pounding with hope and trepidation as they gazed up in amazement at what awaited them high above. What would happen next to these intrepid adventurers? Would they succeed in their quest? With another chart as their guide, they later ventured into the labyrinthine streets of the city, their hearts pounding with anticipation. They discovered hidden passageways, ancient tunnels, and forgotten landmarks, each offering a glimpse into the city’s rich heritage. Along the way, they faced challenges both physical and mental. They navigated treacherous terrain, deciphered cryptic clues, and even encountered rival explorers vying for the same secrets. But their friendship and unwavering determination proved to be their greatest assets. As they delved deeper into the city’s underbelly, they uncovered a world of forgotten treasures and ancient knowledge. They encountered mysterious guardians, solved age-old riddles, and witnessed the breathtaking beauty of hidden wonders. Their journey was not without its risks. They faced danger, uncertainty, and the ever-present threat of the unknown. But their courage and resilience shone through, propelling them forward on their quest. In the end, their adventure was more than just a treasure hunt. It was a journey of self-discovery, a testament to the power of friendship, and a celebration of the city’s rich heritage. As they stood at the end of their quest, having uncovered the secrets of the ancient chart, they realised that the real treasure was not Eldoria’s glory or the hidden tunnels conquered, but the bonds they had forged and the memories they had created, as well as the journey itself.
