Though in its infancy, the European enterprise has the power to change both the perception and the actual face of Europe. This book evaluates the future potential of this new type of enterprise. The contributors look for European convergence at all levels of the economy: firm, branch, state, and EU. They stress various points of view, using diverse methods, and propose different measures.

The third edition of European Business is published at a time of turbulence in Europe. This uncertainty puts Europe's unique business environment at risk. Key features of the new edition include: assessments of how individual member states affect the integration process and bring diversity to European business; new material on the links between Europe and the World’s other main regions, including emerging economies; new case studies on topics such as the rise of the BRICs, the energy crisis, enlargement and the Euro. The book retains popular pedagogical features to help students make sense of a confusing and complex environment. A unique and accessible text, the book is ideal reading for students of European and International Business and important additional reading for those interested in European politics and economics.

Enron, Worldcom, Arthur Anderson, Merrill Lynch, J.P. Morgan, Citygroup - once the great icons of the US economy, worshipped at corporate alters world over, are now nothing more than an embarrassing memory. The universally accepted American enterprise model, which these and many other corporate giants have slavishly followed, has at last been called into question. Free market capitalism and globalism are not quite what they seem after all, as the decline of the US economy might testify. Donald Kalff passionately believes that the time is right for a sea-change in the way businesses operate and that a credible alternative is a European enterprise model, one which is founded on quite different values of culture, ethics and economic considerations. Packed with vital facts and figures, AnUnAmerican Business is a fresh and agnostic look at the past, present and future performance of companies that have embraced the American way of doing business.

On 8 October 2004, the Council Regulation (EC) No. 2157/2001 on the Statute for the European Company (SE) will enter into force. In order to make the SE a functional instrument for entrepreneurs and investors, as well as to ensure the effective application of European law, it is necessary to pass national implementation measures by then. National legislators have the opportunity as well as the challenge to shape, in some respect, a national model of the SE which would be attractive for investors and would influence their decision as to where the company be located. Thus, the coming into force of the SE-Regulation will also give "the starting shot" for the competition between national legislators with regard to the law of the European Company. The aim of the present book is to provide the first indications in those national regulations specifically concerning the SE. Although no national law has so far been finally adopted, the first legislative steps have already been taken in many Member States and first drafts have been published. These drafts are presented in the book by the national experts. Moreover, the authors from Member States where no official drafts so far exist, express their personal reflections on how the specific regulations of national law would and should look. Given the fact that in October 2004, when the SE-Regulation comes into force, the European Union will be enlarged by 10 new Member States, the reports cover also some of them, i.e. Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic.
