Excerpt from The Soldier's Pocket-Book Attention comrades, we are enlisted for the war and we fight the battles of our country, not for mere pay, but because we love our free and noble government, which has protected our rights and made our na tion respected over the whole world. The rebellion, which has interrupted our peace and which aims to break up our once happy union, is the work of designing and ambitious men, who have disregarded the voice of the people. We do not hate our Southern brethren, but we condemn the designing men who have cheated and beguiled many into a war I which has already caused the loss of many lives and the destruction of an incalculable amount of property. The enlisted men in the United States Army during the Indian Wars (1866-91) need no longer be mere shadows behind their historically well-documented commanding officers. As member of the regular army, these men formed an important segment of our usually slighted national military continuum and, through their labors, combats, and endurance, created the framework of law and order within which settlement and development become possible. We should know more about the common soldier in our military past, and here he is. The rank and file regular, then as now, was psychologically as well as physically isolated from most of his fellow Americans. The people were tired of the military and its connotations after four years of civil war. They arrayed their army between themselves and the Indians, paid its soldiers their pittance, and went about the business of mushrooming the nation’s economy. Because few enlisted men were literarily inclined, many barely able to scribble their names, most previous writings about them have been what officers and others had to say. To find out what the average soldier of the post-Civil War frontier thought, Don Rickey, Jr., asked over three hundred living veterans to supply information about their army experiences by answering questionnaires and writing personal accounts. Many of them who had survived to the mid-1950’s contributed much more through additional correspondence and personal interviews. Whether the soldier is speaking for himself or through the author in his role as commentator-historian, this is the first documented account of the mass personality of the rank and file during the Indian Wars, and is only incidentally a history of those campaigns.

Excerpt from The Soldier's Revenge: Or Roland and Wilfred The voyage was a long and stormy one. Mr. Lorimer kept to himself and scarcely exchanged a word with the other passengers. As soon as the ship landed he hired a cab and was driven to the Astor House. About a week later he went to the nearest recruiting office and enlisted in the Union Army. There was no braver, more daring, soldier than Howard Lorimer. He was utterly reck less oi his life, and, at times, seemed almost to court death. There was not a thing about cavalry that he did not know. He must have served in some Emperor's picked guard, said the colonel of his regiment. Excerpt from Diary of an Enlisted Man In the multitude of books written about the Civil War, very little is said of the enlisted man. His bravery and his loyalty are admitted and that is about all. Of his every-day life, the very thing his family and friends cared most to know about, there is hardly anything said. It is to remedy this omission in some degree that the following pages are published. They were written by an enlisted man and are mostly about enlisted men. They are filled with details that history has no room for, and for that reason may have an interest quite their own. Excerpt from An Attitudinal Study of U. S. Army Enlisted Men: A Study Presented to Dr. James Williams in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Psychology 435 As active duty chaplains we felt that our experience had shown us the needs and problems of these men. Many of our conclusions. However. Were only educated guesses and could not be supported by recent studies. The need grew. Therefore. To perform our own study that would produce meaningful information concerning both married and single enlisted men in the Army. Our first thought was to produce a test that would evaluate the attitudes of soldiers in five areas: (1) sex and dating. (2) Religion. (3) outside influences such as drugs. (4) relationship and attitude toward parents. And (5) attitude toward the army. Once these categories were established. It was decided that the test would be construo ted of statements in each of these categories which the individual soldier had to evaluate on a scale running from strongly agree to strongly disagree. Soldier from the Wars Returning is one of the truest, most profound and readable personal accounts of the Great War. The author waited nearly fifty years before writing it, and the perspective of history enhances its value. He writes only of the battles in which he participated (including the Somme and Passchendaele), though his comments on affairs beyond his knowledge at the time, through later study and reflection, are pungent and stimulating. Among other topics, he describes the politicians, the generals, Kitchener's Army, Hore-Belisha, German gas attacks, Picardy, dug-outs, tanks, the sex-life of the soldier, scrounging. trench kits and the censoring of letters. The author saw the First World War from below, as a fighting soldier in a line regiment. In the Second World War he served as a staff officer liaising between the Army and the RAF; serving two tours at RAF Bomber Command HQ at High Wycombe. This equipped him to draw forthright comparisons between the conduct of the two wars.
