In "The Genie," a genie grants one man his wildest sexual wishes, while the man's jealous roommate must outwit the genie to get what his own fantasies fulfilled. In "The Hotel Housekeepers," a man staying at a hotel eavesdrops on the couple next door making passionate love. But everything is not as it seems. In "Invisible," a shy man uses his newly gained invisibility to secretly observe a female co-worker. Finally, in the novella "Interrupted," time stops for a man who is interrupted just before an orgasm. ADULTS ONLY. EXPLICIT SEX.

The two Muslim poets featured in Scott Kugle's comparative study lived separate lives during the eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries in the Deccan region of southern India. Here, they meet in the realm of literary imagination, illuminating the complexity of gender, sexuality, and religious practice in South Asian Islamic culture. Shah Siraj Awrangabadi (1715-1763), known as "Sun," was a Sunni who, after a youthful homosexual love affair, gave up sexual relationships to follow a path of personal holiness. Mah Laqa Bai Chanda (1768-1820), known as "Moon," was a Shi'i and courtesan dancer who transferred her seduction of men to the pursuit of mystical love. Both were poets in the Urdu language of the ghazal, or love lyric, often fusing a spiritual quest with erotic imagery. Kugle argues that Sun and Moon expressed through their poetry exceptions to the general rules of heteronormativity and gender inequality common in their patriarchal societies. Their art provides a lens for a more subtle understanding of both the reach and the limitations of gender roles in Islamic and South Asian culture and underscores how the arts of poetry, music, and dance are integral to Islamic religious life. Integrated throughout are Kugle's translations of Urdu and Persian poetry previously unavailable in English.

One of The New York Times Book Review’s 10 Best Books of 2021 Shortlisted for the 2021 International Booker Prize and the 2021 National Book Award for Translated Literature A fictional examination of the lives of real-life scientists and thinkers whose discoveries resulted in moral consequences beyond their imagining. When We Cease to Understand the World is a book about the complicated links between scientific and mathematical discovery, madness, and destruction. Fritz Haber, Alexander Grothendieck, Werner Heisenberg, Erwin Schrödinger—these are some of luminaries into whose troubled lives Benjamín Labatut thrusts the reader, showing us how they grappled with the most profound questions of existence. They have strokes of unparalleled genius, alienate friends and lovers, descend into isolation and insanity. Some of their discoveries reshape human life for the better; others pave the way to chaos and unimaginable suffering. The lines are never clear. At a breakneck pace and with a wealth of disturbing detail, Labatut uses the imaginative resources of fiction to tell the stories of the scientists and mathematicians who expanded our notions of the possible.

Our problems are the same. Couples are stuck in the same bad patterns. Individuals are stuck in the same bad habits that keep sabotaging their joy and expression. The obstacles that people are facing in creating a rich erotic life are the same bunch of obstacles. Just as the foundational information around what causes a bridge to stand or to collapse does not change from bridge to bridge, the foundational information about what makes partnerships thrive or fail does not vary wildly from partnership to partnership. Human nature has structure. Human eros has structure. And the glitches and the weaknesses and the misperceptions that keep tripping us up are the same ones across the population. This book is my attempt to articulate and organize these universal conversations regarding our emotional, relational and erotic lives.--- Om Rupani
