Excerpt from Family Religion, or the Domestic Relations as Regulated by Christian Principles The Bible alone gives us an authentic account of the origin of our race, its earliest form of social organiza tion, and the institution of the first means for its moral culture. God created man in his own image; in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. Gen. I. 27. And the Lord caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof. And the rib which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bone, and flesh of my flesh: She shall be called woman, because she was taken out of man. Gen. 11. 21 - 23. He which made them at the begin ning made them male and female, and said, For this cause, shall a man leave father and mother, and Shall cleave to his wife; and they twain shall be one flesh. Excerpt from The Family Monitor: Or a Help to Domestic Happiness It is an unquestionable truth, that if a man be not happy at home, he cannot be happy any where; and the con verse of the proposition is no less true, that he who is hap py there, need be miserable no where. It is the place of all the world I love most, said the interesting Author of the Task, when speaking of home. And lee may be feli citated who can say the same. Any attempt, however fee ble, to render the domestic circle what it ever should be, a scene of comfort, is at least benevolent. Nor is this a hopeless effort; for he who has the Bible in his hand, and speaks as the oracles of God, can disclose at once, and in few words, the important secret. The principles of great est consequence to mankind, whether we refer to science or to morals, lie not buried deep in gloom and mystery, but are to be found, like the manna of the Israelites, upon the surface of things. The secret of happiness lies folded up in the leaves of the Bible, and is carried in the bosom of religion. The Author knows of no other way to feli city, and therefore does not profess to teach any other. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Family, a Religious Institution, or Heaven Its Model Let those who have gone from the quiet places of their youth, where they were educated, amid the sacred re straints and endearments of a well-ordered rural home, and are now resident, with their own growing house holds, in the midst of some more bustling town, or in the bosom of some vast and whirling metropolis - let them look back and contrast the home of their own youthful days with the present home of their children, and they cannot fail to see the peculiar advantages of the former, and the besetting snares of the latter. Amid the ten thousand diversions of the city, frequently operating, alike upon parents and children, either drawing them from their own evening circles, or interrupting their hallowed quiet, by the infusion of countless frivolities, there is imminent danger that household bonds will be come extensively weakened - that parental influence will become circumscribed - that the home of youth will be poisoned, and the foundations of society become out of course. The present volume comprises 6 highly original studies on material text cultures in different nontypographic societies stretching from the 3rd millennium cuneiform textual record of Ancient Mesopotamia to 20th century Qur'anic boards of northern and central African provenience. It provides a multidisciplinary approach to material text cultures complementary to the interdisciplinary, strongly theory-grounded research scheme of the CRC 933. Six research fellowships were awarded to outstanding young researchers for innovative, high-risk research proposals pertinent to the CRC 933's overall research scheme. Their studies contained in this volume add multidisciplinary dimension to material text culture research, satisfy the curiosity as to the applicability of the theoretical premises and methodology developed and tested by the CRC 933 to research on inscribed artefacts carried out on an international level and in different research environments and contribute to anchoring material text culture research as proposed by the CRC 933 within the tradition and broader context of other research strategies devoted to the material dimension of writing, such as the filologia materiale.
