Excerpt from The Doctrine of Atonement, Illustrated and Defended: In Eight Sermons, Preached Before the University of Oxford, in the Year 1795, at the Lecture Founded by the Late Rev. John Bampton, M.A., Canon of Salisbury The doetrine of Atonement, then, is the fubjeet of which I propofe to treat, and I truft I fhall be able to thew, in Oppofition to the writer above referred to, that it is con tained in the Scriptures, and that the argu ments by which it is afi'ailed are in general inconclufive, and not unfrequently wholly inapplicable to the pomt in quefiion. And becaufe in every controverfy it is of the ut mofl confequence to afcertain and determine what this point is, in order to remove as much as pofiible all occafion of mifconcep tion and erroneous judgment, thofe copious fources of objection and difpute, it is my de fign, in the remaining part of this difcourfe, to prepare the way for the due inveftigati'on of the fubjeet before us, by fiating the doc trine in its plain and fimple form, divefted of every circumfiance in which the iiiue of the controverfy is not immediately concerned.
