The slow opening of the 11th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art began in September 2019, and since then it has been exploring the many cracks we carry, the fissures that keep us apart and those that bring us together. As the epilogue of the biennial The Crack Begins Within calls out the fallacy of claiming for oneself the destruction of the old and the birthing of the new, refloated so many times by the white fathers as a new scaffolding to secure the continuity of their decaying structures. This is the violence that surrounds us, and that we are part of. The Crack Begins Within comprises the overlapping experiences of the artworks gathered here, breathing together, touching and moving one another. It is a testament to the powerful collective stories they tell, the work they do, and the things they shatter.00Since September 2019, the 11th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art has been unfolding in several successive parts. The fourth part runs from September 5 to November 1, 2020. It was originally scheduled from June 13 to September 13, 2020, but had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.00This is the Guidebook accompanying the 11. Berlin Biennale. 00Exhibition: Berlin Biennale, various locations in Berlin, Germany (05.09.-01.11.2020).

Contemporary art biennials are sites of prestige, innovation and experimentation, where the category of art is meant to be in perpetual motion, rearranged and redefined, opening itself to the world and its contradictions. They are sites of a seemingly peaceful cohabitation between the elitist and the popular, where the likes of Jeff Koons encounter the likes of Guy Debord, where Angela Davis and Frantz Fanon share the same ground with neoliberal cultural policy makers and creative entrepreneurs. Building on the legacy of events that conjoin art, critical theory and counterculture, from Nova Convention to documenta X, the new biennial blends the modalities of protest with a neoliberal politics of creativity. This book examines a strained period for these high art institutions, a period when their politics are brought into question and often boycotted in the context of austerity, crisis and the rise of Occupy cultures. Using the 3rd Athens Biennale and the 7th Berlin Biennale as its main case studies, it looks at how the in-built tensions between the domains of art and politics take shape when spectacular displays attempt to operate as immediate activist sites. Drawing on ethnographic research and contemporary cultural theory, this book argues that biennials both denunciate the aesthetic as bourgeois category and simultaneously replicate and diffuse an exclusive sociability across social landscapes.

Participation in art has become a prevalent and contested phenomenon since the 1990s. Artists have increasingly sought to create situations and events that invite spectators to become active participants, in dialogue both with their context and with each other. This reader charts a historical lineage and theoretical framework for this tendency, presented through the writings of artists, curators and philosophers from the late 1950s to the present--Publisher's description.

"This book is about the many ways in which people are creating new and more effective answers to the biggest challenges of our times: how to cut our carbon footprint; how to keep people healthy; and how to end poverty. It describes the methods and tools for innovation being used across the world and across different sectors – the public and private sectors, civil society and the household – in the overlapping fields of the social economy, social entrepreneurship and social enterprise. It draws on inputs from hundreds of organisations to document the many methods currently being used around the world." -- Back cover.

Cultural Writing. Art. DISORIENTATIONS: ART ON THE MARGINS OF THE "CONTEMPORARY," the latest book by up-and-coming cult author Travis Jeppesen, proposes that rarest of things: a poetics of art criticism. Mirroring the author's years spent in Central and Eastern Europe, Jeppesen's writings on artists and scenes situated outside the radar of the larger art world bring together a motley crew of outsiders whose work is destined to push the margins to the center. Encompassing a selection of reviews, essays, riffs and rants on the state of the visual arts, Disorientations is a joltingly unconventional - and confrontational - addition to the literature of art criticism. Disorientations is destined to be the talk of the art world for years to come, and is a must-read for artists, critics, historians, gallerists, collectors, teachers and students alike. Other books by Jeppesen available from SPD include WOLF AT THE DOOR, POEMS I WROTE WHILE WATCHING TV, and VICTIMS.

Installation art has become mainstream in artistic practices. However, acquiring and displaying such artworks means that curators and conservators are challenged to deal with obsolete technologies, ephemeral materials, and other issues concerning care and management of these artworks. By analyzing three in-depth case studies, the author sheds new light on the key concepts of traditional conservation--authenticity, artist's intention, and the notion of ownership--while exploring how these concepts apply in contemporary art conservation.

During the Cold War, freedom of expression was vaunted as liberal democracy’s most cherished possession—but such freedom was put in service of a hidden agenda. In The Cultural Cold War, Frances Stonor Saunders reveals the extraordinary efforts of a secret campaign in which some of the most vocal exponents of intellectual freedom in the West were working for or subsidized by the CIA—whether they knew it or not. Called "the most comprehensive account yet of the [CIA’s] activities between 1947 and 1967" by the New York Times, the book presents shocking evidence of the CIA’s undercover program of cultural interventions in Western Europe and at home, drawing together declassified documents and exclusive interviews to expose the CIA’s astonishing campaign to deploy the likes of Hannah Arendt, Isaiah Berlin, Leonard Bernstein, Robert Lowell, George Orwell, and Jackson Pollock as weapons in the Cold War. Translated into ten languages, this classic work—now with a new preface by the author—is "a real contribution to popular understanding of the postwar period" (The Wall Street Journal), and its story of covert cultural efforts to win hearts and minds continues to be relevant today.

Occupation Culture is the story of a journey through the world of recent political squatting in Europe, told by a veteran of the 1970s and '80s New York punk art scene. It is also a kind of scholar adventure story. Alan W. Moore sees with the trained eye of a cultural historian, pointing out pasts, connections and futures in the creative direct action of today's social movements. Occupation Culture is based on five years of travel and engaged research. It explicates the aims, ideals and gritty realities of squatting. Despite its stature as a leading social movement of the late twentieth century, squatting has only recently received scholarly attention. The rich histories of creative work that this movement enabled are almost entirely unknown.
