A young girl tries out different genres and instruments in this exuberant celebration of music, winner of the Coretta Scott King New Talent Award--now available in a special anniversary edition. This is my family. We all love music, begins a young percussionist. When she plays with her father, a cellist, she taps the triangle. With her sister's marching band, she crashes cymbals together. At her aunt's jazz show, she taps a woodblock. Elbrite Brown's lively cut-paper illustrations, for which he was awarded the Coretta Scott King New Talent Award, depict this diverse, joyous family dancing, strumming, drumming and fiddling their way through a tour of major musical styles--everything from classical string quartets, to rock and roll, to the youngest niece banging on pots and pans. They love music--and most of all, they love to celebrate and play it together. Includes a glossary covering types of music and instruments mentioned.

The Family Caught is a mesmeric expose ? of what is normally hidden from public scrutiny: what happens when a family self-destructs and ends up in the Family Court. Although a piece of fiction, this story of three children's experiences of separation, divorce and the dreadful after-effects has been played out many times in real life. It is a confronting story and not for the faint hearted. It follows the lives of first the parents and then the children as their worlds fall apart. How do children cope during separation? What do their parents do about it? What do the authorities do about it? There is laughter, there are tears, there are little heroes who don't deserve the traumas they are put through but who manage to cope anyway. If you like courtroom drama, if you like to see a family in microcosm, if you like to see the struggles of ordinary people for justice, then this book will remain on your mind for years after reading it.

Excerpt from History and Genealogy of the Cock Cocks Cox Family: Descended From James and Sarah Cock of Killingworth Upon Mantinecock, in the Township of Oysterbay, Long Island, New York As the type of the first edition was about to be distributed there was found to be a greater demand for the work as relating to the descendants of James Cock the Quaker ancestor, 'and as it had proved impracticable to include in the first edition a number of lineages of allied families already in preparation, it has been thought advisable to issue a further edition of 105 copies. To that which has already appeared in the first edition is added a supplement of 71 pages of new matter, for the contents of which see page 404. In this is included all the corrections. Research on the Cox family genealogy was begun by Rev. Simeon O. Coxe (1877-1955). Verl F. Weight (one of the many descendants of the Cox family) and Mrs. Charles W. Cox (Willie Miller) further researched, compiled and published the information into the first edition in mimeographed copies in 1962. When time took its toll on these copies and years of work began to fade away, Mary Carol Cox volunteered to retype and publish As A Tree Grows into a paperback book.

'I often get asked about leadership in football, but in "real life" I can think of no greater example of what a leader is than Seán's wife, Martina. I have followed what she has done for her husband and her family and it has humbled me.' Jürgen Klopp, from the foreword. Life as we know it can change in an instant, in the blink of an eye, and it did for Martina Cox and her family in 2018. On an ordinary day in April that year, Seán Cox travelled to Anfield to watch his beloved Liverpool FC play. But he never made it to the match. A vicious, unprovoked attack left him with a severe brain injury, unable to walk or talk. Here, Martina tells their remarkable story. It is a story of inner strength and determination, of dedication and commitment. By not taking no for an answer, and with the help of their family, their community, the Liverpool spirit and tens of thousands of people across the world who were touched by Seán's story, they have achieved what was thought impossible. With Hope in Your Heart brings Seán's story up to the present day. At its heart, this is a love story – the kind of love that conquers all.

A Wall Street Journal writer’s conversation-changing look at how reading aloud makes adults and children smarter, happier, healthier, more successful and more closely attached, even as technology pulls in the other direction. A miraculous alchemy occurs when one person reads to another, transforming the simple stuff of a book, a voice, and a bit of time into complex and powerful fuel for the heart, brain, and imagination. Grounded in the latest neuroscience and behavioral research, and drawing widely from literature, The Enchanted Hour explains the dazzling cognitive and social-emotional benefits that await children, whatever their class, nationality or family background. But it’s not just about bedtime stories for little kids: Reading aloud consoles, uplifts and invigorates at every age, deepening the intellectual lives and emotional well-being of teenagers and adults, too. Meghan Cox Gurdon argues that this ancient practice is a fast-working antidote to the fractured attention spans, atomized families and unfulfilling ephemera of the tech era, helping to replenish what our devices are leaching away. For everyone, reading aloud engages the mind in complex narratives; for children, it’s an irreplaceable gift that builds vocabulary, fosters imagination, and kindles a lifelong appreciation of language, stories and pictures. Bringing together the latest scientific research, practical tips, and reading recommendations, The Enchanted Hour will both charm and galvanize, inspiring readers to share this invaluable, life-altering tradition with the people they love most.
